Why We Write

Hello My Undaunted 7th Graders!

Today in class we explored some passages from the book Spilling Ink, by Ellen Potter and Anne Mazer, and you each signed the Writer's Permission Slip which allows you to write anything you want within our Creative Writing Journals.

Towards that end, we set up our class Creative Writing Journals, and talked about the process of creativity and how first drafts of writing aren't always great. In fact, often a first draft of what we write is the complete opposite of great, and it's only through revision that our writing grows.

But within that time of creative space--where we let all our ideas out onto the page--we can finds some gems and possibilities.

I loved watching you each set up your journals, as well as tape your permission slips to the inside cover. And great job on your first Quick Write of the year!

Our word of the day today is UNDAUNTED, which means determined, unafraid to move forward. And example of the word in a sentence is: After my car accident, for a while I was NOT undaunted about driving again; but over time, I eventually became undaunted about driving once more!

And for homework tonight, respond to the following question using the "Comments" feature right here on this blog post. (Remember to include your name!)

In your opinion, what is the purpose of writing? WHY DO WE WRITE?

Peace!

Mr. R

  9. I think that we write to express what we are feeling. Also to communicate to to many people around the world whether is is many people reading the same thing like a book or to send private messages letters emails and even texting, but they are all forms of private communication through text

  10. I think we write, because it's a form of communicating with people far away and to keep records of past mistakes so we don't repeat them. Also, writing can be a way to release all of your pent up emotions you hid from your friends and your enemies and to express who you truly are.

  15. Why do we write?
Writing is often considered as a language everybody should know and use. The purpose of writing is to show others your ideas from your head and your heart. People can teach, communicate, and share ideas using words from writing. Our comments are also written- typed from the keyboard. Writing also records the history, and we can determine the future with history. I can't imagine the world without writing...

Fun fact: Writing actually improves your drawings! :)

  18. I think we write to express different ideas we have of the world. No matter how much it just seems like action, they always seem to have some meaning, or at least a cause to it. It's also a way to bring out sides of you that under normal circumstances you'd never share, but through a book can be a way to express those emotions or thoughts. They aren't always direct, and they might even seem like a completely normal action, but usually there's some deeper meaning behind it.

  20. I think we write for many reasons, some of which I will list. First, I think we write to keep records of important events. Also, I think we write to entertain ourselves and others. Writing is also for communication, and additionally, by putting things you feel strongly about on the page, you can cool down about them, but also sometimes find a solution to what you wrote down.

  22. I think we write so we can express our emotional needs. For some peiple, writing is the only thing that connects them with other people. For many people like us, we write to keep records and other such things that we think we might forget about. Also, many people rely on writing because they need to contact each other and schedule things.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think we write because it shows us how other people feel and act. It will take us on adventures we could never have ourselves and tell us lessons we would never know. We write to express our feelings or to get things of of our minds. We also write to share our feelings with others.

  27. The ice berg is a perfect example of why we write. Many may write purely because the people around them simply don't understand them. I'll refer to this as the "ripple effect".

This is how I would explain the ripple effect…

A book, poem, article, novel, (all writing related things) = the "ripple effect".
The "ripple effect" = more understanding among a wide(r) range of people.

  38. I think we write to share feelings and ideas that we can't directly say upfront, ideas that are shared through characters, events, and even nonfiction text to spread knowledge or awareness. We also write for ourselves, so we don't have to be stuck in reality forever, but we can write about things we imagine, and things we wish we could experience. Writing is way to say things that you can't speak, or go to places you can't physically visit. :)))))))))

  39. I think we write because it's a way of recording our ideas accurately in a way that most people can understand, as opposed to drawing or speaking. Also, I believe we write as a way to escape the real world and its pain, to create something "better", and less hurtful. Finally I think we write for fun something to do when there is nothing to do. We write because we want to not because we have to.

  51. I think that we write to help express our feelings/emotions in another way. We write stories about what has happened in our lives, and all the emotions are expressed in a different way, than when we express them when we talk. We also can express ideas, and facts through writing. Non-fiction books, fantasy, sci-fi (and on and on), are all ways of expressing something; a feeling, emotion, facts, and events.

  52. We write to show other people a different way to think about something to give a whole new perpose of just a bunch of words.

  53. i think that we write to express feelings or what has happened in our lives. Also, to just pour out whatever is on our mind and get it out. Its a way to express something without having to say it verbally to a specific person. writing is an enjoyable resource that is very helpful in life.

  60. I think that people write as a way of putting their thoughts into something that other people can always read. Say you make an amazing speech. "Words spoken can only be heard once, whereas words written can be read repeatedly for years and years to come." (by me). Also, when someone has an idea or thought, they can write it down so as not to forget it. Foolproof, right? No wonder writing is so popular. Finally, writing is a way to tell someone something even if you're not near them.

  61. the purpose of writing is to let our thoughts and feeling out maybe indirectly such as a poem or a novel, or directly as a letter and or a dairy. it is also used to get a message across

  62. I think that we write to communicate our ideas and thoughts. I also believe we write to express ourselves and to sort out our feelings. Writing is a way for people to show who they are and explain their thoughts when they can't say what they want. While your writing no one is telling you what you can or cannot write about. You're free to write your feelings without fear of judgement and communicate them.

    ReplyDelete
  63. writing is an easier way to express our feelings!!!! We may just write for just the fun of it... or to just "get something out" if it were to bother you. People also use writing to write to other people cause they don't want to talk in person. Writing is a way of life.

    ReplyDelete
  64. We write to express ourselves, because there are some things that are easier to say through writing, or there are things that are easier to explain through writing.
We also write to get our feelings out, onto paper. I usually feel better when I write about something that's on my mind, and that's also a way I solve some of my problems.
Thrid, we write to spread news and important headlines, like on newspapers. \Without these, word wouldn't travel as fast, and people on one side of the world wouldn't know what was going on in the other continents.
And fourth, we write to have fun. :)

  72. In your opinion, what is the purpose of writing? WHY DO WE WRITE?

Writing, to me, is an easier way to put in to words how you feel, to express how you feel, and allow your mind to just let out all of your thoughts, emotions and ideas. It is also a way to bring out your creativity.
Writing is a way to relax. It doesn't necessarily have to be about picking and choosing the best words to describe--in some instances, that will come naturally, it's about putting it all down on paper, again, expressing yourself.
Writing is also a natural part of everyday life. We write letters to faraway friends and family, emails to teachers to ask questions--even this blog-post!
Writing is important in several aspects of life. It's a way to let all of your thoughts out. It is a way to record events for later reference. It is a way to be creative, and imagine, and jot down your ideas. It is also a simple part of everyday life, we use this method all the time. To me, that's just part of the purpose of writing.

  100. I think we write for various reasons, none of them nessicarily being better than another. Sometimes, we write to express our thoughts and feelings, as negative ones, such as stress, anger, fear, sadness, anxiety, etc sometimes feel better when we write them down. Or is that just me? Also, we write to communicate ideas, spread news and our opinions, like what we're all doing now. Also, with writing that you're going to share, you can double check your phrasing a million times over, wheras we can never erase the words that come out of our mouths, and generally plan those out less. Isn't that funny? Also, people can constantly reference writing, while you can easily forget words and thoughts that don't go down on paper. Remember, regardless if you are writing an idea, opinion, nonfiction, or anything really, make sure you write it down befere you decide it's stupid.

    PS, Sorry this is late!!
