Making Your Voice Count

Welcome to Friday's English class! As you read this message, if all goes according to plan with technology, we are in our classroom using the iPads from the iPad cart. And if this is the case, look up now and you'll see Mr. Reynolds walking around with a big goofy smile on his face that you all are here and you made it to our blog.

English class!

Blog!

Sharing what you think!

So, for today, let's get comfortable learning how to post comments on our blog, have a discussion, and follow some links to fascinating stories and information.

First off, have a re-read through the Robert Frost poem that is so important to the book, "Nothing Gold Can Stay." http://www.online-literature.com/frost/748/

After reading the poem, stand up from your seat in class, go to any part of the nearest whiteboard, and write in ALL CAPS one emotion word (one feeling) that the poem gives you.

Back in your seat? Great. Now, check out this perspicacious article in THE NEW YORKER about SE Hinton and THE OUTSIDERS.

Notice that the article was from one of Mr. Reynolds's favorite magazines, whose covers happen to, well, cover one of our classroom walls! Now that you've read the article, stand up again and find another space on any of the whiteboards. Write a single sentence that shares your opinion about books for young adults--are they powerful, important, plentiful, too rare still, wish there were more of a certain kind, wish...

Back in your seat again? Great! Now, share what you think in response to the following question. For this response, write a few sentences by clicking on the "comment" link below the blog post. Write your ideas, then simply use your first name and first letter of your last name right after your sentences (no need to log in). Then post!

As people post, ad other students' responses, and try to write a reply or a comment to someone else's ideas. Awesome! We are having a class discussion on our blog!

Question: why do you think the battle between the Greasers and the Socials exists? Do you think people who are different from one another always struggle and disagree? How do you think love can be more powerful than fear or hate?

I am looking forward to what you think!

  1. No, I don't think people that are different don't get along. I believe this because I am very different from my family and some of my friends yet they ARE still my best friends. I I actually agree with them a lot.

  2. I think that the socials and greasers are fighting because of their lifestyles. The Socials never not get what they want and the greasers rarely get what they want if at all. This makes both groups mad and they think that the other group has it better. As a result of this they fight and argue a lot.

I think the battle between the Greasers and the Socials exists because of a characteristic of human nature to shut away people who are different than what we consider "normal". In a book I read titled "What's your problem?", a young British boy who speaks a different language is treated with racism just because of the different language he speaks.

To answer your second question, no I don't think that people who are different always argue. An example is our classroom-we have some people who have different skin colors and different religions from us, and we don't always fight.

To answer your third question, sometimes yes, sometimes no.

  10. I think that the conflict between the socials and greasers is caused by their differences. While it is natural for two different groups of people to disagree, difference does not necessarily mean that they will have conflicts. In some cases, opposites attract! I honestly don't know why love is stronger than hate, all I know is that's just how it happens.

  11. Love can be more powerful than fear or hate because fear and hate are somewhat futile. Love is the breeding ground for new life; it's hope. It runs through all of us. Hate and fear are tied together . They are learned. But they can never trump hope ; the light.

  21. I think the battle of the greasers and socials exists because people in general usually judge people by looks. We shouldn't judge a book by its cover! It's just not right. This battle happened because the socs looked down on the greasers like they were nothing. When really, some of them may have so many things in common and could become really strong friends! To conclude I think this gruesome battle happened because of people being judgmental and not giving people a chance.

  22. I think love is powerful than fear and hate for many reasons. First, love is stronger than hate and fear. It is a bigger and better emotion. Second, love makes you love other people. Last, if you have love you probably aren't fearful or hateful.

  23. I feel like love is much more powerful than fear or hate because unlike the other two, love is (usually) a positive emotion. Most people would want to pursue things or people they love, but avoid things or people they fear or hate. If you love something, that overcomes any negative emotions you could feel. Love is like a beacon of fire in an icy, dark world; it makes you feel safe, warm, like there's something worth fighting for.

They feel like the other group is better off so they want too fight them to make their problems bigger and get each other on equal playing ground. But what they don't realize is that they are both in very similar situations and both have a lot of problems. People who are very different from each other may disagree a lot, but on the other hand they also can agree on many things as well. But the greasers think that the soc are pompous fools and are babied all the time, and they can do whatever they want and never worry about things like money or food or buying new clothes or getting into fights but having enough money to patch themselves up again.

  40. I think it existed because they are opposers and the greasers are hellish and it probably just started by some one making fun of the other then it just kept on going it's just a reaction to what happens in school there is always that group of kids u hate or dislike and we don't fight them but they are in a different time and direct naberhood so maybe there when u don't like some one u just hate them. I don't think people who are different fight all the time people are the same and different in every way u can think of and if every one fought we would be in a on going war the some times u have more things in common with people and maybe people who you hate u could have in common every one has troubles same or different. I rather love then hate and in a Roark room a candle the light sickes out in the dark and sometimes the light is too far away and the darkness blows out the candle and its up to you to light it again yes the darkness took over but make ur own light and he happy and love people I love my friends in a bff way but I love my family in a family way and they are who I want to hang out with and talk to not to people who are mean or bad or that I hate I did get in fights with my friends and family but in the end it's back to normals.

  45. Well, the greasers are mad at the socks only, really because they are, always driving into the greasers "territory" and the greasers don't like it so they fight back. On the socs side, they just like to drive around talking, probably, then they get annoyed by the greasers, because the greasers are being territorial. Then when the socs end up being fighted, they get angry and try to go into the greasers territory to hint out the people that fought them, then the problem increases.
I don't think that people that are different always disagree, because, I think that every one can change and there are no separate personalitys for different races or ranks.

  53. I think that people just have to accept one another's differences. Sometimes it can be difficult to get over some thing and if it bothers someone to the extreme they may decide they dislike that person which may lead to hate. The Greasers and Socs could not accept one and other so they resulted in hate and after while their hate grew and grew. Love can only be found if the person is willing to accept the flaws and differences, love will over power hate because love is stronger and hate is weaker.

I believe if you can see it from both sides you could have a better understanding of the person and then maybe get where they're coming from. 60. I think that the battle between the Greasers and Socials exists because they haven't ever been open with each other. To elaborate on that; they haven't really gotten to know one another. They've always had been violent, and mad at each other, but they haven't even tried to be kind and honest with one another. "Never judge a book by it's cover", that quote gets into play here, to never judge a person by what they are like on the outside. They don't know any different way to encounter one another, but to be violent.
I think that people who are different can struggle with all the hate they get. We all are different in some way, and we are learning to accept that, and not judge people who are not the same as we are.
I think that love can be stronger than hate because we all have someone that we love, and we are very passionate about them (like your family)

  61. I think the Socs don't even fight for the same reason anymore. Maybe at one point it was since they had all the money, so the Greasers were jealous. The Socs live this awesome life, but yet they still make it bad by joining 'gangs' and jumping Greasers for fun. Now I think they only do it for amusement. They get to laugh at the helpless kids. Maybe it's their horrible, twisted, messed up way of feeling accepted with the other Socs. Every Soc has money and fancy things, so they can't exactly bribe their way with wealth. The Greasers hate the Socs since they beat them up for seemingly no reason. The Socs have a reason, just a horrible one. The Greasers aren't helpless like the Socs think, and they want to prove it-they want to be tough. Anyway, I think love is more powerful than hate since especially in the characters in the outsiders they don't get much love, or at least direct love, like Darry to Ponyboy. When they feel love, it makes them so happy, and they might do things they never would usually. Hate can make you distant sometimes, but everyone needs love, at least a little. sorry, I not good with love.

Two people don't have to be the same to get along, all they need is to be able accept who the other person is and maybe you might find something new about them. Hate is only temporary and should pass quickly if you try, but love is some thing that could last forever no matter how hard you try not to.

  63. I think that the battle exists because they had two ways of living. The Socs and the Greasers both hated each hated each other's lifestyle for example the Socs had fancy expensive cars and the Greasers had old run down cars. I think different people can get along.

  64. I think that the battle between the Greasers and the Socs exists because they both seem different, but are more or less the same at heart. However, neither of the gangs knows this. What they see is that the Socs are rich and spend their money on useless stuff like fancy cars while the Greasers are fighting to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. They seem so different, yet they really are more alike than even THEY know. I'm not sure why people who are different tend to fight and have disagreements, but I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with money. Maybe the rich arrogant/ snobby people feel like they shouldn't be friends with those who have less money than them, and that's when the problems start. Well I think that the war/battle between the Socs and the greasers was just because first impressions kind of tell you who your dealing with weather it's your friend or a new kid at school,so if that do something you find disgusting or rude then our human nature is to just retreat from that person or react in a way that's not that nice so I would understand why they don't get along because they have two totally different lives/ perspectives.

People who are different don't always disagree because their different I personally like friends who have a different perspective on life then me because it helps me be more of a people person but sometimes difference friends don't always get along but that's okay it doesn't mean end your friendship!

❤️Can be more powerful than hate because if you love someone than it will make sort of a bond but if you hate or dislike people than it sort of gives you a barrier to communicate and be friend with people

  77. I think the greasers and socs fight because they all feel like they have to be tough, so no one will actually know if they are sensitive or different. They might believe that the tougher you are, the more hidden you are. They want to be the toughest so they can stay the most hidden. People who are different tend to fight a lot, but they usually come to a realization that their differences fit together:) Love is stronger than fear or hate because love spreads more easily than fear or hate:))))))

  78. I think the Socs and greasers fight because one person has bad opinion and then everybody has a bad opinion and then people start hating each other. I don't think that people who are different struggle because everyone is different and everyone doesn't struggle. I think love is more powerful because love lasts a lifetime fears and hates don't last as long as them

  79. I think that the Socs and Greaser fight because they have so much in common with each other. They both feel that they have the right to do stuff they want and go wherever. Greasers are the type that rely on each other and move as like a pack. Socs and Greasers can't accept the fact that they have there differences but they are the same inside. On the outside Socs look all cool and everything but in the inside they all have their struggles and hardships in their life. I think that love is more powerful than hate because no matter what you do to try to not accept something in the end the truth will always come out.

  80. 1) The battle between the Greasers and the Socials exists because both Greasers and Socials were different from each other. Conflict may begin with difference, as that is why these groups fight with one another.

    2) No, people who are different from each other do not always struggle and disagree.

    3) Love is more powerful than fear and hate because life cannot be enjoyable without it. Fear and hate only makes the world worse.

  81. I think the greasers are jealous of the socials lifestyles that's why they're always looking for a fight. Also, I think people who are different from each other don't always struggle and disagree because everyone's different in their own ways so technically everybody's different.

  82. People who are raised differently, some people having more things than others, having different things than others, different religions or are raised in other places have different views on what's important and how you're "supposed" to live. The greasers and socials are on opposite end of life, so naturally they disagree. People who are different don't always disagree, sometimes your favorite person in the world is someone who is a polar opposite. Love, fear and hate are the most powerful feelings in the world. All more mild feelings come off of them, such as liking, disliking and nervousness. I don't think one is more powerful than the other.

  83. I think that the conflict between the greasers and the socs is a popularity contest or some way of impressing other people. The socs are richer more posh people and I think that they are trying to just earn respect. The greasers are more poor people, for them it takes hard work just to get through the day so I think that they are also trying to earn respect but just for sort of a social pool for them to rely on.

I think that love is much more important than fear and hate. Love is something you can't escape but fear and hate is a choice, you have a choice to have a fear of something or hate something but you can't escape love

  84. We write to express the feelings that we have that we can't say out loud. We write to share an important story with different people. Writing is a way to say what you want to say and not be scared what other people think.
