Outside or Inside...Or Neither?

Welcome back! It has been great to see you each today, and to dive back into English class with a Quick Write and a few more Ideal School presentations. Your presentations are engaging, thought-provoking, and insightful. What strikes me most is that in almost every single Ideal School you have created, hands-on, active learning is a theme.

Our word for the day, today, is LACONIC, which is an adjective that means using few words. It is the opposite of one of our previous vocabulary words, LOQUACIOUS, which means highly talkative. Here is an example of the word LACONIC in a sentence: The shy student seemed laconic at first, but once he got to know everyone, he became downright loquacious!

Read the following quote from the novel Habibi by Naomi Shihab Nye, and then share your ideas about the question that follows it (in the response section of our blog):

"Let's believe together in a world where no one is either inside or outside, yes?"

Even though we have not yet read Nye's novel, if you had to make a guess, what do you think this quote is suggesting? Why?

No wrong answers--share your thoughts below! Peace! Mr. R.

  12. I believe this quote is suggesting that the author wishes there to be a world where no one is more or less wealthy or important. Everyone is equal. I believe this because the quote says "...in a world where no one is either inside or outside...". Someone who is outside may represent someone who is poorer than the people inside.

  20. I think what this quote means is that the person saying the quote is suggesting friendship and trying to create her ideal world in which nobody or nothing is left out ( inside or outside) he/she may have been judged previously and that is why he/she is trying to make a judge free ideal situation where everyone is included, including herself. No social ratings or popularity and favor towards some and not others.

  24. I presume that Nye's quote has to do with ones mental feeling and choice. But I think his quote implies that people that feel many different emotions should believe, even though there beliefs might not work because they are sad or depressed, meaning "inside or out".

  25. It's saying that we should believe that no one should be included too much or never included. When we begin to this, the world will become a better place for all of us. I have been in situations before where I wanted to be included in activities, but was not allowed. Also, I have excluded my brother sometimes because I thought he was too young. Maybe the whole world shouldn't be judgmental.

  26. I think it means that no one should be on the outside of something-not part of it but in order to make that happen you have to make sure there is no inside because if there is no "inside" you can't possibly be "outside" of it. It is saying that no one should have to feel like they are a outsider.

  27. I think that this quote is suggesting that we should live in a world where no one keeps there feelings inside and pretends they are someone they aren't and no one is really loud and tells everyone how they feel and it ends up annoying everyone and it makes everyone's life worse.

  30. Im not all that sure what this quote is saying, but if i had to guess, i would say that it has a meaning about discrimination. When it talks about the "inside" and "outside", i think it means one race, religion, gender..etc.. compared to another, and it is saying that they do not need to be compared, because they have equal rights or something like that..

  35. I think that this quote suggests that no one is higher or lower in value and everyone is even, having the same things. Of course in real life, this would never ever work because a lot of people do not have the same work desires or good ones at least, and have become quite lazy. This laziness is not good for anyone, mostly in the sense that we, the people, have to unwillingly pay for them and there families through taxes, so they can do nothing and sit around watching tv, eating and becoming obese. These taxes do also work because some people have medical problems not allowing them to work.

  37. I think that this quote is suggesting that we would all live in the world where everyone is equal. I think this because the quote says, "Let's believe together in a world where no one is either inside or outside, yes?" In Nye's novel when he says, " no one is either inside or out" I think that he means no one would be richer or poorer than another, or that no one is better or worse than another. That is what i think this quote is suggesting

  38. I think the quote is suggesting that "they" (whoever they are....I'm not really sure yet) should think/dream about a place where everyone is equal -- there is no difference between gay and straight people, black and white people, poor and rich people. They should believe in a world where there are no social ladders to climb and everyone befriended everyone else just because they liked them.

At least I think that's what it's trying to say....

  51. I think that this quote is suggesting that in "this world" no one is in the "in" club or in the "out" club. The "in" club being the popular people who wear the right clothes, have the right stuff, say the right things, hang out with the right people, and so on. The "out" club being the rejects: a group of the people the In's consider not like them, and not "worthy". A world without the "ins and outs" the "socs and greasers" the "jocks and geeks" would be much better than the world we live in today. That's why whoever said the quote would like to believe in a would without the groups.
