A Credible Account

Today, in some classes, we finished our IDEAL SCHOOL presentations, and began our new class novel, The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. The novel is a powerfully credible account of a fictionalized journey of 11-year old Parvana in her quest to courageously stand up to the Taliban regime and help her family survive.

Our word of the day today is CREDIBILITY, which means trustworthiness, or the ability to inspire belief, respect, and trust. And example is: Because of her work in Afghanistan. author Deborah Ellis has a lot of credibility in her writing of the novel The Breadwinner.

For tonight, share a brief response to the following question: what do you think is one of the most important values of a government and why?

  1. The most important value of a good government is trust and respect. You should be able to trust your government to do what they said. Also you need respect in a government so that they don't abuse their power and bring kayos to the world!!! (jk they must respect their people

    1. How can I trust everyone in the government if new leaders are constantly being elected? Will it be governed by a single but trustworthy king?

  2. I think the most important value of a government is doubt. A government or unorganized governing body should always doubt its own ability to function properly, and subsequently enforce as many counteractive laws as possible at its formation. For example, the USA, after liberating themselves from the tyrannical rule of the UK, had doubts about whether or not its own political system would have uncorrupted rulers, and made checks and balances based off of this.

  3. I think one of he most important values of government is the control over the area you govern. I think this because you could be a good person and choose to protect it, or be a bad person and dictate it. This is why you need to be a credible person to be a person involved in politics.

  5. The single most important value is to ensure the country's citizens are happy. THIS IS THE ONLY GOAL. This may mean they fell safe, are not economically stressed, and each contribute their share of work. A country's goal is to ensure the well-being of all citizens, providing them with anything they may need for success: education, protection from robbers and killers, employment, and a solid foundation of trade enabling access to many varying resources. A country should also allow safe foreign citizens to immigrate in or out, but not force this. (I think indentured servants was a great idea.)

  8. I think that the most important value of government is trust. Citizens want someone they can trust. Who they can rely on to make the best choices. If the citizens have someone they can trust, they will respect that government leader more. This will also lead the people too make the right choices, which will help them be more successful in life. Having someone to look up to, can make a huge influence in someones life, for how they will act as they become more of who they want to be like. In the end, just having a leader that is trustworthy can make a huge impact!

The most important Value is that the government not to be bi-est, because if they are one sided they probably wont listen to anyone's opinion and the country's citizens will not be happy and not get what they want. Also if they are one sided the people who are on the opposite side will not want to be in the country because they wont want anything the person wants

  10. citizens should be able to trust that the government is able to make good decisions. This means that the president, mayor etc. should be able to help fund the economy and solve problems like food or water shortages. Also the government should not look down on different races sexes etc.

  11. I think one of the most important reasons that there are governments is to keep everybody in order. If you have no government there will be no laws enforced upon the nation. Having a government keeps you safe and secure. Also, money will soon turn into chaos, we pay taxes to the government so they can contribute to medicare for example. These are reasons why I think having a government is really important.

  12. I think one of the most important values that a government has is to be trusted. If you do not trust your government, then you should move. A government should be trusted because they run lives. One wrong move that they make and their country might go into war. So you have to have faith and trust in your government. Because your life may depend on one decision that they make. If a government is not trusted, they should not be there.

  18. I believe two of the most important traits to have in the government are equality and kindness. Because equality gives women, race and difference a chance to give their all in life, everyone wants to speak, THE WORLD wants to speak and have everyone be equal. Also, kindness because people make mistakes, do things wrong and are obviously not perfect, so we need a government that understands that, gives forgiveness to little mistakes and looks at everyone ideas with an open mind.

  19. Matthew Atwell I think that the most important responsibility of a government is to be fair to its citizens and make the country a place where people want to live. This is because to have a well sustained government the citizens have to be happy so your country will run well. A country with unhappy citizens could lead to civil war and make a country that Afghanistan has become and Syria will become.

  20. One of the most important values of a government is that it is fair. For example, some citizens shouldn't have to work harder than others for the same pay, like happens with communism. Another example is education. Governments should provide an equal education to everybody. Also, for court, people should be prosecuted fairly. There shouldn't be any biases changing the sentence of the person in court. These are some examples of why I think fairness is an important attribute to a government.

  21. I think the most important value in a government is loyalty. I chose this because a government needs to be loyal to others and to its own people. It can't just say"I will help you" then not do anything. A government NEEDS to be loyal to it's people otherwise the people will retaliate against the government.

  23. i think it is important because it is up to the government to make the right decision because the decision mean a lot if you are a government and if you make a wrong decision that will make another think that you are right so then they will do whatever you said even if it was a bad decision. that why the government has to make the right decision. That just doesn't go for the government it goes to us too. We need to make sure that we are voting for the right government. If we choice the wrong government then we believe him and we will make wrong choice which will be bad. So it depend on the government and us. That is why i think it is important to choice the right government.

  24. One important value the government is credible for is responsibility. They hold responsibility for making some of the important decisions for our country. If every citizen had to help make small and large decisions it would be very chaotic and difficult with so many opinions. The government is held accountable for their decisions and if some issue were to occur they must deal with it. They are responsible for many different issues and that's why one of their important values is responsibility.

I think that one of the most important government values is to allow everybody to have an say on what happens in that country they are a resident in. I think that this important for a country to have because It would result in a smoother running economy. Also, the country that has more happiness of citizens will also have less protests or fights within the country, resulting in more ways the country can thrive along with its citizens.

    ReplyDelete
  26. A few values that are important for the government to have are credibility, respect, and perseverance. You need credibility so people trust you and trust that you are making the best decision that there is. You also need respect, no explanation needed. Lastly, you need perseverance because a government official needs to be able to keep going even when something they didn't want to happen happened. Without perseverance the government would get nothing done.

    ReplyDelete
  27. In my opinion, the most important values are fairness and respect. If the laws are fair, but the people don't respect/trust the government, the country would be in chaos. If the people respect and trust the government, but they see that the laws don't make sense, again, that would cause a bunch of problems. In order to have a good government, you need an EQUAL amount of both of the qualities I mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think one of he most important values of government is that it is better than having a king or queen, where all the decisions are made by that king or queen. When a country is run by a government, it has many people discus and solve the problem if there ever is one. I think this is one of the most important values of having a government because everyone or most people have a say in the decision that is made.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that the most important value of government is credibility. If a politician is not credible, the government will not be stable i it is a democracy.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think that the most important value in a government is being honest. For example, a lot of people want the truth and only the truth, so the government needs to listen to the people, and they need to think like a citizen so they know whats wrong, and they know how to fix it.

The most important value of a good government is corporation the government needs to cooperate with towns and cities by giving federal tax dollars to the towns that need it. Like road repairs, education, natural disasters, and roadside assistance. The government has to cooperate with the poor to lower taxes because the poor doesn't have money to pay taxes. The government should also cooperate with car manufacturers to reduce car pollution. As you can see the most important value of a government is cooperation.😄🤗

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that the most important value in a government is credibility within a fair justice system. I think this because if you don't have a credible justice system, then people will shy away from reporting crimes because they won't think that the guilty person will be caught and punished.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think the most important value is trustworthiness. People need to be able to give the government credibility for their jobs and know that they are not going to take over and eventually make everyone powerless.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think the most important value of government is balance, everyone having equal say. If people (or groups) do not have the same say as others, than that is getting close to tyrants and dictators. Some people will think they are superior to others because they have more power, and that thinking can turn them into a tyrant/dictator.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think that one of the most important values of a government is thinking about the peoples needs first. The government needs to decide their choices with the people in mind or else there could be a government downfall or a revolution which are two things a government does not want.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think that a government needs to be respected by it's people, and it needs to listen to what the citizens say. It should not be a government that puts itself completely in power, because times and technology change, and if the government gets a false conception of what the country needs, the people can do nothing about it. Also, the citizens in a country should have a voice, because they're making decisions about the country in which they live. The people should respect the government because they're supposed to be acting as leaders. The country's population should support the authorities who they put in power, or the government should be able to gain their support if they put themselves in power.

    ReplyDelete
  37. One of the most essential values of a government is its ability to successfully maintain positivity, happiness, and protection provided for everyone. If a country lacks this, it will most likely be torn apart. For example, in the United States the laws are made fairly for the citizens and have given us a safe environment to live in. We are living in a place where there is freedom -- therefore, everything leads to happiness.

    ReplyDelete
  38. There are many important values of the government, but I would say the most important value is credibility, I think this because if someone wasn't credible, no one would listen to them and someone in the government needs to be listened to, and trusted with their word. If someone in the government is not credible, then that person would have no say in what is going on.

  39. i think that if you have good intentions for your people then you good in my books -michael gibbons

  40. I think one of the most important values of a government is loyalty. The citizens should feel that they can trust their government, and know that they will help them when they are in need. If a government is un loyal or untrustworthy, riots could start and lead up to World War III! Also, depending on the government people could elect new candidates, who could be even worse than the government before! So thats why a government should have loyalty.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think the most important value of a government is the ability to listen to what the people say, because if your job is to control and help the people, should't they have a say in what happens to them? They have to be credible and honest instead of controlling and secretive.

    ReplyDelete
  42. In my opinion, there are many different qualities of a government. But If you were to pick ONLY one, then I think loyalty/trust is it. The government must stay loyal and trustworthy to it's people. With out loyalty, the people of the governed area, would have no one to turn too, and soon fall apart

    ReplyDelete
  43. A government needs to be reliable, so a good values that a government SHOULD have (but then again most governments dont) are honesty and reliability. So if your government had a rather stupid infiltrator (otherwise why would you know this information) and that person was working their way up in the government and, first, telling other countries, "oh the west wall of paper city is weak," (but you could get in anytime in the rain) and then taking taxes from the government raising the taxes and building the self a huge mansion, and meanwhile the ENTIRE government was covering up the official. That wouldn't be the greatest government would it "oh we need about 20,000 dollars from you by the end of the week, er, just because we are building better roads, er, no not roads! We use hoarse and buggy, er, there, um" (excuses by the government tax collector)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think that the most important value to have in the government is loyalty. Loyalty will produce a better society because loyal leaders are leaders that can be trusted and that are credible. With this we can know the government is in good hands. Also I think that to have a good government the government has to be able to confirm bringing help and usefulness to the table. If the government cant be able to help the society and bring happiness to the society then its useless. That is what I think has to be in a good Government.
    Sophie Bartram

  45. I think the most important value of a government is to insure equality, justice, and trust. This means everyone could be treated based on who they were as a person. Also trust is important because if you can't trust the government, you can't relax in a country without worrying about it. Overall , you should feel like you're treated fairly and that you are safe in the country you live in.

    ReplyDelete
  46. One of the most important values of a government is honesty. A lot of politicians and people who are involved in the government will promise to do something only to gain popularity, and when the time comes, they won't live up to their word. This will usually lead to people being unhappy and angry because the government didn't keep their promises. Also, having an honest government would create greater solidarity in the country, because the citizens would be able to trust and respect their leaders.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think the most important value of the government is credibility. Citizens should be able to trust and respect what they are told and should also be comfortable with the governments decisions. To gain trust from people you need to have credibility so that they can know that they are safe, also that they don't need think twice or regret anything. The government should be respectable and reliable and without credibility the government can't take those titles. ~Jessica DiPietro

  48. I think the most important value is like Nick said; the citizen's should be happy. In the Bread Winner and in real life, women are not allowed outside! This means that they are probably really unhappy and some girls might have never been outside which is really sad. In our country I feel like all of are laws and way of government lets the citizens express themselves and live happily. Also, another important value is that the government is under control. If people are doing whatever they want and the government is not trying or not being able to stop the citizen's from doing those things, people will get hurt, die or they can start mini wars in the country. I think that these are two of the most important values of the government

One of the most important values of a government is probably equality. All people should be able to have equal access to education, to vote, and to jobs. It's important that people are not discriminated against because of their age, their gender, or their ethnicity.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that the most important values of a government are to have balance and control throughout the area of "rule". The government should treat the citizens equally, not discriminating them for anything. Also, war/violence shouldn't be the resolution to any problems of or within the country. This will probably get out of control, lead to a new leader, and just lead to total chaos.

  52. There are many important things involved in running a country. There is structure, to make sure that the government isn't corrupt and runs smoothly. Also, you need to have one person with more power than others but can be over ruled by the lower body. Thirdly, you need to have equality to make sure everyone gets a say in the decisions, and that the one person in power doesn't abuse it.

  53. One important value of a government is equality. For example, in America, both white and African American citizens can vote. This was put in affect in 1966 by the Supreme Court. Also, women receive rights to vote in 1920. These are some examples of equality: voting. Personally, when I think of equality, my mind immediately thinks of voting and the opposite race and how together, our government created this whole new idea of voting: Negro presidents, both race voting, these are all examples of equality. I'm mainly talking about race because that's the "topic" we are "currently" talking about. I also think that a government takes justice in their own hands, and respects their citizens. This is all in America. There are some problems around the world involving world peace, poverty and other situations the government can and cant control. The real question is if they want to take action. And if they make the right choices.

  55. Question: what do you think is one of the most important values of a government and why?

One of many important qualities in a good strong government is a group of people that takes the needs of the people directly into consideration. A government with representatives that are empathetic to others and are cognizant of what they could be going through. An ideal government wouldn't fight each other for power, but instead work together to keep the citizens of their country safe, happy, and maintain the people's pride in their country. A good government focuses on real world issues, and not side issues with which they have their own separate opinion that cannot be changed. These attributes would give the government credibility and the trust of the people it assists.

  56. The most valuable thing for a government to have is trust, if you don't have trust there is chaos and anarchy within the country. The government would not be credible to it's people. There would be fires and murders no one would stop any criminals. The police and all emergency response teams would be useless.

    ReplyDelete
  57. There are many important values that the government is made up of... For example, trust because if the government does not give or receive trust its very likely that our country would fall apart. Without trust, one of the main components which a good government needs, there would be a lot more fighting in our country. But, instead of it being against our enemies, it would be against ourselves. This is a few reasons why I think trust is one of the most important things a good government should have.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I feel that the most important values of government is fair treatment of people dependent upon beliefs, wealth, age, nationality, race, sex, religion, and many other things that people can be judged by. This is important so that the country can have proper human rights for example, so that people of a certain religion can't enter the country or get taxed more. Or if because this person is a woman they can't leave their house. This will mean that people aren't showing their full potential in society.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think the most important value is the trust of the citizens, and caring about what the people want the most.

    ReplyDelete
  60. One of the most important values of government is being able to protect your society and make sure that you are a credible group altogether. I think this because without your society thinking about you as a good resource or party, they will not respect you as much, therefor making more chaos in the society than order.

  61. I believe what it is important about a government is choosing war to be the last I solution to choose. War can be devasting and families are putting their loved ones in dangered. I also think that a government that gives everyone the same right. What I mean by that is their should be no segregation, no sexism! This is unfair to some. I also think it is important to have a free religion country. This could reduce war as well as other conflicts.

  62. I think the most important quality in a government is that the citizens control the government and the government doesn't control the citezens

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think that the most important value of a government is the amount that they know about all the people. They can get information out of votes or anything of that sort, but if they don't know anything there is no way to make things better.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think one of the most important aspects of a government is our word of the day, credibility! If the citizens are able to trust the government and their decisions that are backed up with accurate information and views from the people, this will lead to much greater country, or whatever it may be, as a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Of the many important values of the government, I think faith is the most important. Without faith in your government, you would always be constantly thinking to yourself about safety, reliability, and trust. Faith needs to be in the government to show it's country that they will protect it, from whatever is harming the country. Faith should automatically be in everyone for it's government. Otherwise, the government will fall apart. So, the government should ALWAYS have faith.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I feel like a good government should treat all of the people without prejudice or inequality. The average citizens would make most of the decisions through voting. It should be strong and ethical, without any corruptions (such as rich business officials buying their way into the system). The government should earn the citizens' trust in order to sustain peace within the country.
