Of Images and Ideas

Today, we explored photographs from Kabul, Afghanistan. We saw pictures of the rich history and heritage of the capital city of Afghanistan, and yet we also saw images of life under the Taliban rule. Afterwards, you each chose a side to discuss and debate the presence of American and foreign forces in Afghanistan.

I appreciated your sensitive, insightful, and astute comments--in many cases based on the current news articles about Afghanistan that you found, annotated, and shared with us in class.

For tonight, read through Chapter 3 of The Breadwinner, and afterwards, make a prediction, below, about what will happen to Parvana's father. Do you think he will be released from prison? Detained? Something worse? Share your idea and why you think so, below.

  1. I think that Parvana's father will be beaten and tortured a lot, but I also think that he will eventually be released from prison. I think that his family and Parvana will come to save him.

  2. Yes, i think Parvana's father will get released out of jail. I don't think they will do anything extremely bad to him because he didn't do anything extreme. But when they release him, i think he will be very weak.

  3. I think he will be detained because why would they arrest him and just let him go for no reason. Or they could execute him because he is an Afghan and they are at war with the Afghans.

  4. I think Parvana's father will be released from the prison, but he will be badly injured and not able to walk at all anymore. I think this because a lot of the story revolves around him.

  6. I do not think he is going to be released anytime soon becuase the taliban don't seem like they would forgive someone they think has violated their law.

  7. I think that Parvana's father will be beat up and then released. I don't think he committed an extremely offensive insult to the Taliban so I think they will do something drastic in public, like cut a finger, or a toe and then release him.

  8. I think that Parvana's father will stay in jail fo rhe entire book, because since the guards weren't letting him out then, the chances are slim that they will ever let him out. Also, there is no chance of him escaping because he only has one leg, and he left his walking stick at his home.

  11. I think that parvanas father will get in trouble because paravanas mother and sister tried to get him out of jail so I believe that now that five on his mother and sister wentThe punishment will be much worse than it would've been before. I think that farther will be killed/ in hair parvanas sister will be hit and the mother will be killed or beaten.

  12. I think that the father will eventually be released from prison, but I'm not really sure how long it will take. Even though he didn't commit any sort of crime, its obvious that it isn't as easy as demanding that someone be released from prison and the guard saying "Oh, I apologize for the inconvenience, he will now be released." I do think he will get released, but we can't really be sure exactly how soon.

  13. I don't think Parvana's father will be released from prison, but I don't think they will do "something worse" to him either, unless he provokes the Taliban. I think they will just keep him in prison.

  14. i do not think he will be released because the taliban is really stubborn,it seems, and so they will not release him because they think he is breaking all of their rules.

  15. I think they would kill him. Because they already are killing people for no reason. Now that they have a reason for him to get killed. There reason is not really a good reason to kill someone. But there reasons are for things that are really small. But I hope that they release him.

  17. I think that Parvanas father will get out of jail but not after a long time. I think that he will be in there for about 3-4 years at least. I think this because when they lose a lot of control they will release a lot of the people who committed smaller crimes.

  18. I believe Parvana's father will not be released; and if he is it won't be until near the end of the book. I think this because of how the guards of the prison acted towards Parvana and her mother. Even Parvana dressed as a boy wouldn't shake them in my opinion. They don't care about how the people feel, they just do as their told and if anyone tries to stand up to them they attack.

  26. I think that they will do something like public tortue. i hope they dont because that is awful. I dont think they will kill Her father because he didnt really do anything that bad. all he did was have an education.

  27. I think that Parvana's father will end up being kept in jail and might be tortured by the Taliban or forced to read something to try and make him join the Taliban. And to save her father, maybe at the last minute Parvara might become a hero to her father.

  28. I think that he would be kept in prison forever, due to the fact that he was teaching kids foreign stuff from the U.K. Therefore, they would just jeep him away from trying these type of things. The only way for them to release him from prison is for the U.S to take down the tailiban once, and for all.

  29. I think Parvana's father will be detained. I think he will stay in jail, but eventually be released. I think he'll be detained because I don't think that having an education is one of the things that they'll kill someone for and it's not something that they will just let him go. I mean if they wanted to he could have been killed right in front of Parvana and her family.

  30. I think that Parvana's father will eventually be released. He might have to stay in prison for a long time, and Parvana's family will probably undergo some hard times while he is in prison, but I believe he will eventually be released. True, the Taliban don't like any foreign influence in their country, but I don't think this issue is as big to them as some other issues involving mainly the women. I certainly don't think Parvana's father will be executed for having a foreign education.

  32. I think that the father is being detained because before we started the book you said that Parvana will have to provide for her family; that must mean that the father is either extremely sick, hurt, or still detained.

  35. I don't think Parvana's father will be released from prison because I don't think the Taliban would just let him go if they think that he has "foreign ideas". They might think that this would encourage him to defy them and they want to prevent any uprisings.

  37. I think there will be a time in the book when Father and the family attempt to get him out of prison, bet gets caught in the process. Because this is a series, I think the author creates a larger problem for all the characters to solve in the later books. In this book however, I believe that Father will make contact with his family and at least try to become free of the prison.

  38. I believe they are going to use Parvana's father and his reading ability for there own good. Most of the people in Afghanistan can not read, this might mean that the Taliban can't read as well. He might be used to write and read things for them, almost like a personal slave.
    --Anna Laursen

  39. I think that they will detain her father because the Taliban soldiers have just about no respect for women and they don't have a male old enough to probably convince them to let their father go. Also I think they may be scared to go back again to help try and save her father because last time she did this they got kind of injured.

  40. I do not think think that Parvana's father will be released from prison. The Taliban seem very stubborn towards foreigners. For example, my article was talking about how the Afghan goverment is planning on having a peace talk with the Taliban as early as March. The reason this wasn't an option earlier was because the Taliban was refusing to talk with the U.S in their country. The Taliban think that the Afghan goverment is supported by the U.S. They will probably keep Parvana's father in prison as long as they "feel like it."

  43. I predict that the father will be sent to the soccer arena to be tortured at half time in front of the public. I think this because not only did the father get a foreign education that the Taliban doesn't approve, but he dislikes the Taliban and doesn't really seem like the type to keep quiet about how much he is against them. I believe they will punish him for both.

  48. I think that Parvana's father will be detained at least for most of the book because the Taliban are really nefarious and won't want to let him go. I think at the end of the book Parvana will probably find a way to get him out but he will be weak and thin and the family will have to nurse him back to health.

  51. I don't think its impossible for him to get out of jail, just very unlikely. Because although their laws are different than ours both places wont bend the laws for certain people. So its unlikely that they would let the father out of jail.

  52. I think Parvana's father will be in jail for a long time and Parvana's family will not know when he will be released. I think this because the Taliban arrested so many people they just loose track of who did what and just assume that everyone has done something terribly wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think Parvana's father will be kept in jail for now. A simple thing like not being able to read changes someones perception of things. Like Parvana mentioned, most of the Taliban are illiterate. This means that they are unwilling to pick up and learn a trade such as reading and they are less understanding of other people's views, such as a writer's. This idea is blown up when Parvana's father's life is at risk. The Taliban has a limited understanding of situations, and believes that only one thing will solve it. Their way.

  54. I don’t think that the Taliban will just let father go because they wouldn’t have put him in jail in the first place if that was the case. I think they will either severely injure him or maybe even kill him because of where he came from.

  55. I think that Parvana's father will not be released from jail. That is why Parvana will have to dress like a boy and become the "breadwinner" for her family. by the end of the book, I think Parvana's father will be released from jail.

  67. I think that Parvana's father will not be let out out if jail till the end of the book, because if he died the author probably would've said that on the back of the book instead of saying he was just in jail. Also i think he won't be released till the end of the book because Parvana has to be a bread winner, but if her father was released he would continue making the money; not her.
