It's All About Synthesis!

Today in class we are jumping in to the realm of SYNTHESIS! This is an awesome skill that involves combining two or more ideas to make a brand new idea! Instead of comparing and contrasting, synthesis uses both ideas (or objects, or events, or...anything!) to create something new that did exist before.

One great way to think about synthesis is the following:

A + B = C

Instead of comparing A and B, we are combining them together to make something brand new: C!

Today you each received two strange objects from the mystery bag and had to combine the objects together to create a story that is dependent on both of them--a new C! I loved hearing your stories!

For tonight, be sure to share in the comments below an example of SYNTHESIS in the natural world or in your daily life.

Peace!

Mr. R

  1. Although it's a out science, it's true,I'm talking about respiration and photosynthesis(synthesis is in it!) Without plants we couldn't live and without us plants couldn't live. Without photosynthesis there would be no oxygen for us to breathe and without carbon dioxide the plants couldn't make oxygen through photosynthesis.

  2. Photosynthesis is synthesis (you can tell because of the name) because carbon dioxide and water combine to form sugars and oxygen.

  3. When you read a couple different books to come up with a thesis to write. This is an example of synthesis because without all the books, your end product (the thesis) wouldn't exist.

  4. Among other things, synthesis is key in life. But not just in life, but in, say, the ingredients for a cake! The flour, sugar, butter...etc. are mixed together to form a hole new substance. They add together to equal something else

  6. The sun does a form of synthesis when it takes two atoms on hydrogen to make a helium. It fuses 620 metric tons of hydrogen each second.

  12. an example of synthesis is in nature how plants produce oxygen for us to survive and we produce carbon dioxide so in addition to a synthesis this is also an example of interdependence (yes, this is an example from science today

    Fusing hydrogen to make helium is an example of synthesis. This is when the sun combines with the large amount of gravity to make helium and energy which heats the planet.

    An example of synthesis in nature is photosynthesis because in photosynthesis 6 carbon dioxide + 6 water + light -----> gluten + 6 oxygen.

  21. An example of synthesis is when you talk, air passes through your vocal cords. Therefore without the air, and without the vocal cords, no one would be able to talk.

    Also, when there is an election for a position of power, such as president, there needs to be candidates and voters for the event to be considered an election. Without one of those groups, it would either be a monarchy or an ungoverned land.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Not to get off topic, monarchies are also very good. A monarch still gives power to a small group of people. Some are even elected. Only some Emporers and Dictators have complete power. So your analogy applies to almost all governments.

    this is a form of synthesis because you begin with a seed and then through a process called photosynthesis a big leafy, tall, beautiful thing called a TREE!

  28. (Pain + Struggle + Happiness + Choice + other small modifiers)*1,000,000 = experience

    Pain = Loss + Injury - Hope
    Struggle = Rejection + Fear (Very Very Very Optional) + Failure + Distrust
    Happiness = Fun + Pride + Accomplishment + Love*2 + Relief + ethical determination
    Choice = Input + Influence + Participation in Everything + Belief in free choice + Reaction
    But what good is experience if you don't Enjoy life. I have been elaborating on the wrong formula. It should be:
    Happiness = Fun + Pride + Accomplishment + Relief + Love*2 + (ethical determination*ethical observation intensity) - sadness
    as I said earlier where;
    Fun = Doing what you like + being challenged + Relaxing + (Popularity*Popularity Desire)
    and
    Pride = Pride of Accomplishment + (Other's knowledge of accomplishments*(100%-Boasting ethic Penalty)*Popularity Desire)
    and
    Accomplishment = (Completion of Goals*Goal Significance) + Doing what Loved one Wants + (Improving Ethics*Ethical Observation Intensity)
    and
    Relief = (Previous Struggle - Current Struggle) +
    (Previous Pain - Current Pain) + (Current Choice - Previous choice)
    and where
    love is a mystery
    and
    sadness has many small modifiers but mainly revolves around FEAR (cough cough), Expectancy of Misfortune, the belief of self inefficiency and a lot more.
    Please ask a lot of questions and debate in the comments.
    Just to say I put in in: Synthesis.

    3. Technically, if sadness revolves around expectancy of misfortune, then that means you are sad because you think you're going to be unfortunate. But say you are in a competition and you expect to be last, when you do better and get second to last or better you will be happy that you did better than you expected. Even if you did get last place you will be satisfied that you got what you expected. However, if you expect to be first at everything, and you do not get first you will be sad and disappointed. It's not expectancy of misfortune that makes you sad, it's when you have less fortune then you thought.

      Delete
    4. I understand your point; accomplishment is more worthy if one didn't expect to succeed. When I type" Expectancy of misfortune" I mean having failed so often that you have little will to try. It is true that FALSE expectancy of misfortune creates happiness, but not if you keep failing. 10 fails in a row is much more than 10 times harder on someone with just one fail. Also, guilt and embarrassment are two major sadness factors that are probably worse than expectancy of misfortune, but you do have a good point.

  31. One example of synthesis in real life is, two have a child you would need a father and mother. If you did not have either of them you would not have a baby. Another example is when you have a pencil and paper. You need them both because if you did not have a pencil, what would you write with, and if you did not have a paper, what would you write on? Finally, the last example is when you have cold air and hot air.If you did not have cold air you would be super duper hot. If you do not have hot air you would freeze. :)

  34. I have two examples of synthesis: one pertains specifically to me, but possibly to others. First off, for me, an example of synthesis is writing a song: I can't write without all three of these things:inspiration, a pen, and a piece of notebook paper. For some, all that is required to write a song is pen and paper, but my standards are different.
    Last off--you can't print something off of a computer without a printer, a piece of paper, and ink. If you are missing any on of these, whatever you are trying to print is not going to become a hard copy.

  39. imagination + materials + hard work + knowledge(sometimes)= anything.
    With imagination comes ideas. With those ideas you need to have things in which you can accomplish your ideas with. With materials and an idea all that's really needed is hard work to make this idea happen, but sometimes you need to know just a little bit more. Without imagination there is no idea but if there is an idea but no material there is nothing to do and even with an idea and the right materials, if no work is put into it nothing will be done.

    1. What does "anything" mean? Does it mean anything done before or any anything? Can someone make working wings or is this limited to previously made grappling hooks and the like? Or does knowledge mean I know how to make wings? If you incorporated unlimited time into the equation, it might make some things easier, like a multi billion dollar project or something that takes centuries to build. (A bridge to the moon.) Good thinking. Anything with just some thinking, materials, work and knowledge is a good idea. (And a good use of synthesis.)

  58. Synthesis isn't exactly A + B = C, you see;
    A = flour
    B = water
    C = bread before there was yeast.
    If you subtract A from both sides...(MATH ALERT)
    Water = bread - flour.
    You can't take flour out of bread.
    However you can take out the water via evaporation.
