Barriers, Decisions, and Dreams

Over the past few days in English, we've explored ways thinking, writing, and connecting challenge us and grow us.

On Friday, you each worked with your peers to overcome the "rock wall" barrier without falling into the dreaded lava pits or being consumed by dragons. Holding hands, your entire classes had to find a way to cross the barrier without breaking the tape. You used teamwork, encouragement, creative and critical thinking, and a few people's backs...and did it!

Yesterday, we explored the Boston Photographs of 1975, and the decision of the Boston Herald to print or not print the photos. You each pretended to be in the shoes of the editors, and you defended your decisions with critical and creative problem solving.

And today, we began to explore the civil rights' movement in America, as we prepare for our new novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. You each taught one another what you know already about the movement, then we discussed connections, and then watched and discussed Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream Speech

Our word of the day yesterday was INCEPTION, which means the beginning, and today our word was RELENTLESS, which means not lessening in intensity or strength.

For tonight, share your ideas regarding this question: What do you think are effective ways to fight against injustice? Why? Can you connect to any personal experiences, books, or films you may have read or seen?

  3. Some effective ways to fight against injustice are to speak out against it and peacefully raise awareness of the injustice. By doing this you are fighting against the injustice in a peaceful way that won't hurt anyone.

  4. Everybody has probably faced a time when they felt that something was unfair. Usually when there is a bad outcome or experience you want to fix this problem. Away you could fix thing of injustice that have gone wrong, is by bringing attention in a kind of forceful way.

  7. I think an effective way to fight injustice is for a community to unite and fight, not physically, for what they believe. This is what Martin Luther King Jr. and the people that followed him did and they were successful.

  8. I think in order to fight injustice, you need to do something BIG. Something that even your opponents can see. Something that shows that you are a force to be reckoned with. Maybe like a speech, rally, boycott, or a march…but my point is taken. For example, in Martin Luther King's I Have A Dream Speech, he speaks to Caucasian as well as colored people. And he made a big difference by delivering that speech. Small things can help too, but only in a small way. These small things can lead up to big things, but over time. And there are some disadvantages to doing something big. But I think the pros rule out the cons on this one.

  10. I think an effective way to to fight injustice is to tell people about it. If other know about it than they will fight too. I remember once I read a picture book about children who lived like neighbors, but were delegated by a fence.

  11. An effective way to fight against injustice is to do what Martin Luther King did, respond peacefully. I have seen pictures and films about Martin Luther King marching and being beat, and yet he never used violence. Eventually MLK got his way even though he didn't use force.

  12. I think talking to a crowd about what you think or debating is good, also when you debate or make a speech you should relate to things that a lot of people are also going throw, like Martin Luther King did. This would make the listeners be more engaged, they will listen to you better, and it wont be stuff that they either already know or stuff that are so boring that they don't even want to know. I do not know if I have read a book that would connect to this topic but I think I am not shore if this book does connect or not. But the book called "Injustice for all" by Robin Caroll.

  13. I an effective way to fight injustice is to keep telling them what you believe. Do not stop so that they can get it in there heads. If you do, nothing will happen. You have to fight for what you believe. Like Martin Lutheran king, when he kept with his dream to make the world a better place or Rosa parks, when she didn't want to move from her seat just because someone wanted it. If they did not keep with there dreams and just let people by, our world would not be what it is now.

  15. I think that a way to fight injustice is to get many different people who agree with you, then begin to debate to try to get more people to agree with you. Another important thing is things may or may not change depending on the situation that you can try to prove. I see this when I tell people that they are doing something thats wrong, they say they're not.

  16. When you have followers while fighting injustice it really helps. You have to have a reasons that you want whatever to happen. Protesting is a good way until you get into trouble.

  17. I think that speaking up for what you think, make a speech and tell someone about it and raise awareness are good ways to fight injustice. For example people that are gay or lesbian fought for the right to marry their own gender.

  18. I think the way to fight injustice is to advocate. Not fight. By fighting physically or even verbally, you lessen your chances at having willing followers or believers. By telling people about your beliefs in a peaceful and advocative way, you ensure that people will see you as approachable and ready to conquer.

  20. I think that speaking up for what you believe in is an effective way to fight for injustice because it can "shine a light" on a situation so to speak and help people to see the reality instead of what they think because they are being shielded.
Although, I think protests and acts of violence is the wrong thing to do because people won't take you seriously because violence is almost childish and they won't have respect for you. But if you handle the situation in a calm but strong, nice but forcefully, people will be more likely to listen, respect, and take your opinion or belief into consideration.

  21. I think that speaking up, and letting people know what you believe in and what you think is right, is the right what to fight injustice. I think that in most situations its not the right thing to physically fight, although, it is needed in some situations.

  30. I truly believe it depends on the matter because i believe guilt is one of the best treatments to injustice in the world but if the person truly believes they are doing the right thing or just has no concious one should speak out. One time I took the yoyo in my brothers room and I had a nerves brake down and felt so bad i confessed and he said it was very brave of me and gave the yoyo.

  31. I think the most effective way to fight injustice is to be loud. I don't mean this in a violent way and I don't mean just shout at people until something changes; I mean make sure you get HEARD. Tell people your point of view, get your point across. Try your best to get everyone around you to see what you see. Give speeches, hold up signs and try your best to get noticed. I feel like once you get noticed, it's up to the people around you to also notice the problem and help out because the more people who agree, the easier it is to fight the injustice.

I don't think I have any experiences or books/films to back this up, but it's more of a personal opinion on how I would fight against an injustice.

  32. I think that something to do that is effective is to stick up and speak up about what you believe. One movie that I can relate this to is the movie Selma, which is about Martin Luther King Jr's life and how he kept persisting on making everyone be treated equally no matter how they are.

  33. Perseverance I think plays the main part in fighting for justice. If you keep trying eventually, somebody will listen, and if it's the truth hopefully they will speak up and stand with you. Also bravery plays a part, you have to be brave to stand up for what you believe in. -fiona Nash

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think that an effective way to stand up and fight for what you believe in you would have to be very persistent because if you believe in something so strongly you do just about anything to put your idea into action or stop something that is wrong. For example, during the fight for freedom, Harriet Tubman would not stop going back to the southern states to get other people out of slavery even thought it was really dangerous for her too. Also, Martin Luther King kept on doing his marches and kept on giving speeches even thought he had death threats against him and people wanted to injure him, but he didn't stop because he believed that equal rights was so important that he was willing to die because of it.

  37. A way to fight injustice is by speaking. Shout out to the world how wrong this act is. If you get thrown in jail for it at least you planted an idea into people's minds. I've read a few books and seen a few movies where this happens. Also Martin Luther King Jr. did this when he spoke out for his rights and then was put in jail. Sometimes it isn't what you do, it's what you say that makes the most impact

  38. I believe that petitions and protests are good ways to fight injustice. One of our rights under the Constitution is the right to assemble and petition the government, which could lead to a change of the law. I don't think that violence or fighting is a good method because it will only cause those being unfair to fight back, which will lead to injuries and deaths.

  45. I think that the most efficient way to fight injustice is to publicly express your thoughts in an encouraging way. In most instances there will be a main group that has power, for example a government, that might make the people scared to speak their minds. Sometimes, it only takes one person to speak up, and others will follow. That one person or leader could start a whole chain of reactions, one powerful act after another until there is justice and freedom.

  46. I think an effective way to fight injustice is to speak up and tell others your opinion. People would know what is going on and you could inform them. A good example is MLK jr, he spoke up and people fought with him.

  51. An effective way to fight for injustice is to speak with confidence and with pride. I think this because from experience I know people would probably not follow some person who is quiet and shy. They will probably follow someone who is loud and confident because people would more likely believe someone who is confident than someone who you can barely hear.

  58. I think an effective way to fight injustice is never with accusing or violence, but with giving a good statement with evidence and reasoning. You can have ways where no one will get hurt like a march or maybe holding signs if the location is safe enough. You could hold speeches and talk loud and full of pride with a big enough audience. People will listen to leaders if they are loud and confident, but if someone says what they believe and they are quiet, People wouldn't feel as sure that they are right if they are quiet. If you want people to believe you are right, you have to have confidence.
