An Author's Motive?

Last Friday, we had our 3rd Socratic Seminar of the year, using these questions as a guide. As always, it was VERY hard for me to bite my tongue as I heard fascinating and intriguing connections and ideas from you all--some of you were flipping pages in your novels so fast to try and prove your points. And I love that there were so many powerful articulations of what occurred in the novel and how it relates to our lives.

Remember: English is all about finding out what you really think and believe (and sometimes changing that in the face of a powerful story or approach), supporting your ideas, and then connecting them to life to make a difference.

Today, we continued reading Mockingbird in class as we prepare for Kathy Erskine's visit on April 4th. We also did a Quick Write and handed in our Nothing but the Truth novels.

Our word of the day today was SUBSIDE,. which means to lessen or decrease; to grow smaller. An example of the word in a sentence is: when I got that huge split lip as a kid, it took two weeks before the swelling subsided. Another example is: I hope your love of reading and writing never subsides.

For tonight, share a few sentences in response to this question: why do you think an author writes a novel?  What do you think drives and sustains the author to complete the book and see it through until publication?

  1. When I have an idea to do something I like to wright it down because I might forget it. Even when its a good idea. and if the stories they feel like writing is in there head the only way to get it out might be to wright the book. If they like the way the book is going then they would publish it but if they like the idea but its not working out they might have to start over or change something. ON the time me and my friends thought it would be a good idea to dive these go carts down i steep hill. It was really fun but really anticlimactic. We even filmed it becouse we knew that someone would fall over or it would be really cool... but it was just boring.. that video is now deleted from my phone. so maybe they thought it was a good idea but ended up being really not good. -Andrea Bradshaw

  3. I think the drive that makes authors/novelists complete a book and publish it is that they want to see themselves succeed and people to buy their book(s). Some people enjoy the process of having to continuously make something better until its good enough/perfect. Another thing that drives them to complete the book and publish it might be the money that they can make from the book. You can make a lot of money if your book is interesting and people like it and buy it. Another reason people may write a book and complete it is for the fame, glory, and popularity. You can get very popular and well known if your book sells well.

  4. I think an author writes a novel to tell ideas through a form of a book. Like Mr.Reynolds said in class, every book starts with a question, and when an author stars thinking about the answer, they want to share their ideas with others. Just instead of putting it on the Internet, or going to meetings, they put it in the form of a book.

  5. I think an author writes a novel because they have a message that they want to share with the world. For example, if they want to change perspectives of people on an issue, they can write a story displaying this new perspective. One thing that keeps an author going through the whole book is the desire to see the desire to see the published copy. The feeling is sort of like "I can't stop now!"

Doesn't that make it seem like not much work? Oh well. Maybe I can move you next time." See Elena, I didn't change anyone's marathon perspectives.

  6. I think that when an author writes a book they are really just writing down what they think even if what they think is that we should have 2 children from each of the 12 regions have a fight to the death because its fun. (hunger games if you didn't get that) I think that an author is just showing his or her thoughts through their own eyes and letting everyone know that they believe they are correct so strongly enough that they will write an entire 300 pages about it. I think that the same thing drives an author to get the book published and if they already wrote an entire book they don't want that time to go to waste.

I think an author writes an novel because they want to express their feelings/opinions to the nation in an interesting way that provides enjoyment and knowledge to the readers. The reason that authors(like J.K. Rowling) strive so much to get their books published it that-they need to share their message to the people of the nation. Another reason that authors write/strive to publish their novels is that they get mooooola!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean who doesn't want money?$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  8. An author rights a novel to instill a certain concept or moral about life into the reader. The author's purpose is to get the point across as thoroughly as possible, that's what drives the author to finish the story. For example, Mr.Reynolds's book, The Looney Experiment, tries to teach the reader about having courage and not being ashamed of who you are, and that is what drives most of the story.

  9. I believe that many authors like to write to help others or give a powerful message to others. People that are going through hard times are often hard to understand. A author can write about their feelings to an event. Like a child going through a family crisis and give their part of the story and how they feel. They may also write a book to get a message across to help others maybe going through a similar situation.

  10. I think an author writes a novel to share their ideas about modern world issues, world issues in the past, something personal in their life, etc. It can also bring awareness to a current event, and can encourage the reader to get involved. Also, it can inspire others to be interested in reading and writing and sharing their ideas to the world.

I would also try putting the idea on sticky notes and put them different places i go often so i wouldnt forget

  13. I think there are very many different reasons for an author to wright a novel. One may write it for fun, or to share a good story, while others may write a novel to convey a message, or tell people something. Weather it be problems in parts of the world that the readers probably don't have to endure, like in The Breadwinner, or a message about life in general. Personally, I hope most novelist take into consideration both reasons to wright. What drives them is the fact that someone might laugh at their story, or be moved by the message being conveyed.

  14. I think an author writes a novel to express something. Ether a feeling that they just want or need to put into a story or just something that they think needs to be written down in a story. Words on paper than mean something to them and that they hope mean to their readers. Finally, authors are amazing story tellers that always have a purpose. Every novel has some kind of event or story behind it.

  16. I think that there are two MAIN drives for an author to write a novel. One of them is personal experience - for example, if one had an autistic family member or relative, one might write a book such as Mockingbird to help people understand people with autism better. Another reason is simply pleasure, or because the author has nothing better to do.

  20. An author makes a novel to teach others a lesson and inspire people, also just because they like to write and make up stories. What drives an author to be persistent in his novel is his love for writing and his audience if they've seen other novels by him/her in the past. Also, wanting to make money while doing something that they love.

  22. I think an author writes because they have a great story, idea, to propose to the world. I would think they liked to write too. It could be fiction, non-fiction, they could have some events from their own life included in there! I think its to spread around a thought, and take their readers on an adventure

  23. I think that an author writes a novel to take something they have in their heads and release it out to the world. Either they just want to or they have seen something and think that the world should know about it. The thing that inspires the authors to stick with the book though publication is the hope that someone will like it, that someone will say "This is a good book" and that is what sustains an author to persevere through writer's block and rejection.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Authors write books for many reasons, one of them to have the satisfaction that you published a book that people enjoy reading, like when J.K Rowling was turned down thirteen times, she really wanted to publish her story about a wizard, she did this for a few reasons, she needed the money, and she wanted people to enjoy reading her novel. This also goes for other authors and they write because they need to make a living, but they also do it to get a message out to the readers through entertainment.

  25. I think an author writes a novel to send out a message. it can be a statement they want people to know about, could be a part of history the author wants people to know about, or it just could be an emotion. i think an author keeps sends in the novel they want published to the publisher, because they want people to know about what they are trying to state. its not always about money, and its not always about fame, but its mostly for knowlege

  26. I think a author writes a novel or story to teach us about something. The writer or author would want us to leave the book thinking about the author's message. I think not giving up on their dream drives the author to finish the book and wait for it to publish.

  27. I think a author writes to get some taught out of his/her mind az you write you get out what you are thinking about today or the day before.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think that writers write their stories because they want to inspire and help others in the world. Books are a way for one person's stories and ideas to be shared with the world. There are books that can change a person's life, because it makes the reader feel like they aren't the only person going through these experiences. Even if a book only helps one person, it's still worth it.
Writing can also be very therapeutic for people, and lots of people will feel better once they feel that they can put their story into words.

  29. What motivates an author to write and publish a book is often their love of writing, sharing ideas, and encouraging people to believe in their philosophies. It is very fascinating to have people all around the world to read what you think is the truth. You also receive money for writing a book, as well as fame if your writing really captures people's interests. Authors are also considered "teachers" because they can help you learn new information.

  30. Writers have many reasons to write a novel. I think the main reason is that they want to share a piece of there life to society by writing a personal narrative or a fictional piece. This could be a life lesson, fun experience, or plain information.

It's hard to find someone who is willing to listen but through stories and poems authors are able to get their point across to someone who is willing to listen. The drive is from feeling proud and excited to see what people think. No matter how many rejections, you have to keep going to final say what you want through the story. -Kaitlyn Ostrowski

I Think the author writes to tell a story or moral. They want to share other sides and how other people feel. Some may write for money but then they will not be as determined as another author who writes for the joy and experience. I like to think that an author never wakes up and says lets write a book. They had to go through experiences or heard of peoples experiences.

  33. i think an author writes a novel to express themselves and others. When a person or a loved one is going through a hard time of a happy, exciting time, sometimes you just want to write about it. Or, if you are just strolling down the streete and you see something interesting, or get an idea, then you just write it down. Words become sentences, sentences become phrases...and so on.

  34. Why do I even do anything? Instinct? Why am I typing this response? Do I want to get a better grade? Or is the real reason because I just loved to type? Probably the former, did you say? Well then, why do I want those grades? Is it instinct, or do I want self pride? Isn't EVERYONE happy when they accomplish something challenging? So when I write a book, must I have some reason that will lead toward either happiness or misconception of life? Do you see any other reason? No? Isn't "to get money" a very acceptable reason? Would you argue against the fact that bankruptcy and welfare are good? And how could anyone NOT believe that people write books to get those previously mentioned accomplishment points? Doesn't that make you happier? Is there any reason spreading a message isn't an good reason too? Wait, yes there is. Would you spend many hours night after night with countless, boring hours of brainstorming ideas just to tell your 10,000ish or less readers that "practice makes consistent" Or do you think that professional writers just take advantage of the message relaying bonus? Could you imagine that if for every single possible action you had to balance all the costs (embarrassment, guilt, fear, unpopularity, stress work, boredom, time, chance of failure, social status drop, ethical ignorance, belief of self failure) with all the benefits (pride, ethical abidance, improved social status, relief of negative emotions, accomplishment, career opportunity, relaxation, heat-of the-moment dopamine, happiness) and then compare the net value with ALL OTHER possible actions? For instance, what if you want to stick up for someone if your friends are talking negatively about them behind their back? So will you lose social commonness if you go through? But won't you gain ethical abidance and trust? Now just compare that with choosing NOT to interrupt and let them insult that someone? So isn't the reason for writing a novel just a comparison of use of time depending on your situation and ethical beliefs? And isn't this paragraph very open to response because it only has one sentence? Will I get my grade lowered because of that fact?

Also, wouldn't it be fun to answer every question in a string of answers?

  35. I think a author writes a novel to tell a story to the world. If there a big problem somewhere around the world, an author will write a story to share that information to make a difference. I also think that an author writes a novel to share experiences that can benefit others. I think that an author goes through the publication process to make sure that everyone can hear there point of view no matter what, or how long this processes takes to get the book out into the world.

  36. I think a writer writes a novel out of two reasons:
    1. Personal Interest
    2. To express their ideas and interpretations of meanings and important things in the world
An author might write a book out of personal interest because they are interested in the category. Not only that, if they want to just try something out and have a little fun, a novel might be one of those reasons.
However, an author might write a novel or any piece of literature to express their feelings and ideas. When you read most books it will have a deep inside message. It's almost 100 percent that a novel has a deeper inside message. The author of that novel wants to share with you what they think is important or what they believe people should live by. However, that doesn't mean that people have to follow these rules or that people should use them. It's only a matter of authors sharing their opinions obliviously to the world. They get to share their opinions and readers will get to agree and disagree to the interpretation being presented.

  37. i think that an author writes a novel to inspire others, to get there stories out there and to entertain others. if we didn't have novels, how would we know what magic, and fairies, are? what would we do in our free time? or books in general, if we didn't have books, we wouldn't know how to fix the fridge, or who Albert Einstein was. back to novels, what would we do. an author puts a book to publication and commits to getting it published also because it is what they are respected for, or what they want to do, as a goal, or an achievement. if authors weren't published, or didn't read, there would be a lot more homeless, jobless, poor people, and humanity wouldn't know who harry potter is, (yes, yes that is important)

  38. Sometimes after I finish a book, I read the Author's Note. Most of the time, they talk about how their character just popped into their head and they had to write down their story. I think this is one of the most common reasons writers write novels.

  39. I think an author writes a novel to express what they think. I think that an author has the ability to produce a such character and though into something known as a novel. They say what they think about a particular topic. Also, they might do it simply because it's fun for them! Maybe they like to express their creativity by writing. In addition, money has a good part in it also.

  40. I think an author writes a novel to get a story out there. To show something that they want to express to the world. Its a story so powerful that they will push themselves to finish it. Another reason an author might write a novel is to show the world something. By this I mean something so important is going on that the author has to get the story out there. They see it out through publication because they have a passion to get their project out there. It means so much to them that they will just push through everything.

  41. Being an author can be enough motivation for a person to write an novel. It might be their vocation and will stop at little to write their novel. I think that an author writes a novel to convey a message or to entertain people (or maybe both at the same time). I think that an author will continue writing for two reasons, 1 reason being to want to be able to say that you have written a published book and to feel that sense of accomplishment that after making many revisions and hard work it is finally good and acceptable. Another reason is that the author needs to write the novel for some reason, either for money, to convey a point or another reason that the author feels must be published.

  47. I think that everyone has ideas about the world, and how it could become a better place. Some people communicate these messages through speeches, others just keep them to themselves to use as motivation moving forward in life. Authors, who write novels, are just these regular people who are able to figure out a way to incorporate the message into a story. Then have enough belief that it is important, and enough dedication that they'll follow through and publish their books. I think that writing is really writing your dreams, and published authors get to share them with the world. People who write are just trying to make the world a better place in any way they can. Also, they're providing inspiration and hope to the youth, which must motivate them, too. Still there are classic books, like Hamlet that may not send the best messages out to the world, which are there as pieces to think more about, to try and understand something deeper, below the surface. This is why I think so many people respect authors. They write for more than just the money, they write because it's a passion.

  49. I think writing means something a little different to every author. For some, it can be therapy or a chance to pour all their thoughts and emotions out onto paper, like filtering your mind through the ink of a pen. For others, it's just fun or inspiring, and it feels good to read what you've created afterwards. Many people just want to tell the world something, whether it's done by informing or entertaining them with a story. And then there are the few merciless souls who feed off the tears of their readers (John Green, Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins, I'm looking at you). There are thousands of other reasons for authors everywhere. What motivates an author to finish a book and try to get it published? I think part of it is wanting to get your book out to the public and receive feedback. Writing a novel is like going on an adventure; you make the decisions and you feel kind of like a different person at the end of it. Besides, what's an adventure if nobody knows the story that goes along with it?

  53. I think the motive of the writer is to try to make money off of something the love to do, which is writing. Also a benefit to writing something that is good and people enjoy it is that you book can get tons of recognition, to maybe become a film.

  54. I think an author writes a novel to tell a good, deep story about real life and what (the author) wants to change about the world, or a fun, magical fantasy story. Even better, just to jot down notes, to make it a story about you! Basically, an author wants you to really understand the message the story/novel is telling you, or what's behind it. Overall, authors want the reader to; enjoy, laugh, be sad, angry, shocked, surprised, and get drawn into their book, and to not want to put the book down at all.

The author also might want to share their ideas with the world, and might want to get feedback if people agree or disagree. Some authors in my opinion, share there thoughts through writing! That's why in some books you can really connect to the book or the characters! I think authors write novels as way of calming themselves as well, like some people do yoga if they are angry, or some might play a sport. A book really exposes an author and shows their true self, and shows everyone else what that author is really like! Especially if they connect the book to their own life!

  60. I think an author writes a novel to express something that happened in their life or that is happening in the world right now. Novels normally express something in the authors lives. I think that the feeling of urgency to let the world know about the event that happened in your life can drive a writer to finish the publication process and complete the book. As someone who likes writing in their free time, even though I mostly write short stories, I usually write because I have a thought, idea, emotion, or something else that I begin to write a story to make sense of. An author may also write a story because they have one bit of one, even one little scene in the middle of a story nagging in their head, and they jot it down, fill in the gaps, and it turns into a novel. Also, someone may just write a little bit with no purpose whatsoever, and that's okay, because they never ever have to show it to anyone. Back on the topic of novels, though. Sometimes a novel could be written just to express something, but most of the time, at least for me, it starts with a no-guidelines, no-rules, mental vomit that I'm afraid to forget. Maybe this is different with professional, super-educated writers, but I almost never innitially start writiting with a set goal, more with a rant that comes out as a story. Wow, I got carried away.

  66. I think people wright a novel 1 because it could be fun if you were good at writing. 2 to make your point about what you think. 3 they do not do it for the money they do it for the people

  67. I think that an author writes a book because they want to have fun by expressing their interests, opinions, and emotions. Also, another reason could be to bring the world to the knowledge of a problem that is happening somewhere in the world for example the person who wrote The Breadwinner probably wanted to spread knowledge of the Taliban. Lastly, someone might want to sustain the writing of the book is that if they feel that they want to be accomplished by having the feeling of finishing a novel, a 200 page novel.

  68. I think an author writes a book to express themselves and to have a important message. Also when an author writes a book it reflects what has happened and what they have seen in there lives. Authors will also write books to make money.

  69. when an author makes a book its a way to get there thoughts out to the world. a way to bring there imaginary worlds to life or express feelings in story form.

  70. Authors write books and novels to try to show a message that they care about deeply and the thought of it changing the world makes them work even harder. Authors keep with it, because their love and determination drives them to work as hard as they can to make an impact on the world. Hope and belief that the book will be a hit or will change something in a persons life is a big thing to hold a strong grip on.

  71. I think there are many different motives and reasons for why authors write books. Some write them to express an idea or opinion they have, others want to share a story that tells of adventures and heros. Some authors may just want to write a factual book about an event in history. Any time an author writes a book, they must always have some sort of encouragement or source of inspiration or motive that gave them the idea of writing the book.

  72. I think that authors write novels to convey a message through an example, rather than facts. One could make the point that facts are easier to digest, and a bit more down to earth, but authors' writing is an art. They're not going to change the way they write to make it easier to read.

    Sorry for short comment ^.^

  73. I think usually the motive for an author to write a novel is to tell people a message that they think is important and more people should know. Another motive is where authors go through something awful in their life and they need to tell someone but they have no one to talk to. I think these are the two main motives for why authors write novels but there could and are many other reasons.

  74. I think that an author writes a novel to tell a message. Some are very important messages like don't do drugs or respect your elders. Others are more realxed, for example, always brush your teeth or something small and less significant like that.

  75. There are many different reasons why an author writes novels. One example that a author writes a novel because they want to write something that could give advice or make a few kids laugh. They also probably loved writing and/or went through rough times they could share with others. I think that if i am going through rough times and i hear a story about someone else going through rough times and how they got through it, it could really help me.

  76. i think that an author writes a novel to express his or hers feelings. i also think that an author writes a novel to display their opinions without having to say facts. an author has the encouragement to write a novel because they want to put there ideas out in the world in a different way instead of posting on a social media.

  77. I think what makes and author write a novel is, a life experience or message they are wanting to get across. Sometimes it's hard to express how you one feels by talking about it, could it be that they feel more comfortable writing it down. What drives an author to continue writing in my opinion would have to be the excitement and ambition they have.

  78. In my opinion, an author would make a novel if he or she has a creative idea that they want to share to the world. Also, I think that if the author is interested on the topic he or she is writing about then they will continue to write their story.

  80. I think an author writes a novel to express their feelings or opinions about society and the world in general. For example, in Mockingbird, Kathy Erskine shows her opinion and view of autistic people, and how they have difficulties just getting through bad times.
