Desperate Hope

Thank you for your wonderful reading aloud and discussion today in our class. We have reached the most intense part of THE BREADWINNER, and we now see the desperate hope Parvana has about her family.

After hearing Homa's story about the violence in Mazar, all that Parvana can do is desperately hope that her siblings and her mother are safe. Mrs. Weera encourages Parvana not to think of the worst, and reminds Parvana's that, " 'We must believe they are alive. We must not give up hope!'" (152).

As we think about facing seemingly insurmountable challenges and problems, we wonder if Parvana will find a way to hope.

In your life, when facing challenges, what helps you to hope?

  2. When facing challenges what make me hope is what will happen if you truly continue with the best that you can do. If you can just get through that than the things that come won't be so hard. If you focused on the positive thing the negative ones won't seem so bad.

  9. One main thing that helps me hope is books. Books for me are a portal to another world, where it seems like the characters have worse problems than i do. Also, talking to friends about my problems helps, too.

  13. I agree with Henry, I also think that when I face challenges, thinking about the good things helps me to hope. When I think of the bad things it just feels like it will end up all worse and nothing will be fixed. This is why I think of the good things and not the bad ones.

  23. When I have a challenging problem, I think of the positive results after completing it, if I only thought about how long it would take and how difficult it would be to complete it, I would not have much hope for doing it.

  30. What helps me stay hopeful the most to stay hopeful is to occupy myself with work in any form. Usually I find something to do outside, or read a book if the weather is bad. Also, I remind myself that I cannot change the past and I have no choice other than to move forward and hope for the best of luck during the journey ahead.

And if there is none then I just compare it to the most horrible thing that could happen and that makes me feel better because it makes me realize, that my challenge is not that big of a challenge in the world.

I also try to think about inspirational people and be around supportive people. I also try to think of other times I have overcome obstacles and solved problems which makes me believe in myself more.

  55. When facing challenges, I like to just tell myself I can do it and realize that if I don't figure it out or do it, I'm never going to feel accomplished about that task and I know I'll regret not doing it later. I also turn to family and friends who never fail to help me through a challenge.
