Twisting the Truth...

Today, we acted out scenes from our novel, Nothing but the Truth, and we are beginning to see how the truth can be slowly, slowly, slowly TWISTED! What begins as a small disruption in a homeroom English class is becoming a huge catastrophe.

As we think about our own lives, we can see, too, how seemingly tiny problems can become huge conflicts. Like the characters in our novel, we all have different views and perspectives. And when problems occur, these different views can either be expressed in kindness and with understanding, or with bitterness and resentment.

Share your thoughts about this question, belowIf you were Philip Malloy, right at this moment in the novel, what would or could you do to make the situation better?  AND Do you ever feel like Philip?

Our word for the day is SOLILOQUY (noun) which is a dramatic speech given in a play by one character, with no others present; OR the act of talking to oneself. An example of the word in a line would be: Hamlet, in Shakespeare's play of the same name, gives a famous soliloquy when he wonders about the value of his life.

  1. If I was Phillip at this point in the novel I would ask to meet with Dr.Doane and Dr.Panelli so we could sort the problem out looking at all sides of the problem. Also I would inform the reporter of what really happened and how it was sorted out.

  2. If I were Philip at at this point in the novel I would tell the reporter to stop reporting the story, apologize to Miss Narwin, and get things straightened out with the office. Then weather I'd be in Miss Narwin's class or not, I'd study more and try to get my English grade up so I could start track soon.

    1. Exactly, Sam
Getting into the track team should really be his number one priority. Therefore he should do whatever it takes to get into the team. Since his coach already gave him a suggestion, he should take advantage of that opportunity.

Then I would go to Miss Narwin and apologize and ask for extra work to boost my grade. I would also ask Miss Stewart to have the newspaper stop reporting on the issue.

    2. I agree with Grace, but DISAGREE with Anna (no offense). It was sort of Philip's fault for making it such a big deal with his parents and because of that all of the blame kind of went on Ms. Narwin. She deserves an apology, and she's not really the type to use her power against others (or that's what it seems, anyways).

  4. If I were Phillip in this part of the story I would try to fix everything that has happened by apologizing. Also, I would tell the reporters/newspaper that I didn't want them to report on anything else, except that all the problems had been fixed and it was all justa huge misunderstanding. By saying this, I agreed with Fiona M. on what she said about how to fix the situation Phillip is in.

  5. If I were Phillip at this moment in the book I would I would feel awful and not be worried about track or anything. The thing is, I could try to sort this out with the reporter, but since the article is already published, the matter is viral and irreversible. The best thing to do now would be to talk to the school board and everyone involved to maybe try to work on straightening things out and keeping it low. The Philip way to do things would be to hold my ground, and let the adults settle things. What affects them doesn't affect me, right?
I sometimes do feel like Philip when I get into serious arguments. I feel resentment toward the one I'm arguing with, and I feel like my way is always right. I feel that whoever sides with me is trustworthy even though they could be using me. It happens to all humans because we all have pride; We all have solipsism. This is why I sometimes feel like Philip.

  6. If I were Phillip in this point of the book i would probably get in touch with the reporter and tell her to stop writing about that topic, and also to write an article about what really happened. I probably wouldn't apologize to Ms. Narwin because like Phillip's parents said: he should stand up for himself. Also, from what we have read, Ms. Narwin has been a bit unfair to Phillip and if he apologizes she may continue with treating him the same way. I sometimes feel like Phillip, like when i know something is wrong, and feel a bit guilty.

  7. If I were Philip at this moment of the book, I would start by explaining what really happened to my parents as my initiative. Then, I would go to Dr. Doane and Dr. Paellini and get things straightened out. The last thing would probably go to Miss. Narwin and beg for forgiveness. After apologizing, Phillip would get back to his normal life, running on the track team and hanging out with friends. As for the newspaper article, Philip should just ignore it and focus on good grades.

  9. If I were Philip at this point in the book. I would feel terrible about everything I've done and I would wish I could change the past. I would know that the best thing to do is tell everyone (My parents, the reporter, Dr. Pallini, Dr. Seymour, Dr. Doane, Mrs. Narwin, and everyone else I've lied to) the truth. 57. If I were Philip Malloy, I would get everyone who is involved in the commotion I caused and settle it by apologizing for what I caused. I would say I didn't mean to make such a big deal and I didn't know that it would turn out to be such a great big whopping mess. AND yes, I do feel like Philip sometimes.

  58. If i was Philip i feel like i wouldn't be able to do anything because it already happened and it is probably already on his record. Even if the school reversed his suspension he went to school on Monday the school probably already put in is records that he was suspended.

  59. I feel like Philip when I say something and people take it a different way. I would just go to the newspaper office and tell them what I meant.

  60. I do not think I have ever felt like Philip before. And if I was Philip this moment I would probably talk to the principle about meeting with my parents and talking through the problem, which is happening and I would go to the person who wrote the newspaper and I would tell her; what really happened that day. But that would not change a thing because the newspaper has already been realized and anybody can read it and they will not know about my talk with the reporter. So I will try to get the word out to people about the truth, tell the reporter to make another paragraph about this problem and if she says no because it is not the most interesting thing like people will not be talking as much or something. Than I would go to another reporter and ask them to tell the real story.

I am going to respond to Grace Acton:
I agree with Grace because the adults would probably do a better job at clearing things out than a 9th grader. And I would probably go and see Mrs. Narwin because one I owed her an apology, two I need to get my grade up not just because of my track team but I want good grades, tree it would be my only chance to not be like an enemy with my own English teacher.

  62. If I were Philip, I would try to meet with principal and apologize explaining that I didn't mean for it to go this far. I would explain that all I wanted was to get switched out of Ms. Narwin's class.

  63. I think that I would try to go and tell the reporter that she had over exaggerated and not totally said the truth and that letting everyone know that this is the "true" story ( but it is really not) and have everyone think that this is how the story went be it really wasn't like this and if I were Philip I would go and apologize to all of the people who really didn't have much to do with this situation

  67. personally I would apologize to Ms. Narwin, because he really wants to be on the track team; but you need to have "passing grades" to participate in school sports. Phillip has a D in english and I feel he apologizes first of all he wont get suspended, second of all he could end up having a better relationship with the teacher and could possibly get a better grade in the class. And I have felt like felt like Phillip on more than one occasion.

  68. If I were Philip I would also say sorry to Ms.Narwin and I would ask to talk to the principal and the vice principal at the same time to clear things up.

  69. If i were Philip i would go to first the news reporter and say the actual whole story. Then i would go to the principal and explain my half of the story ask for forgiveness and ask to switch out of her English class to benefit both of them. Finally i would to to ms.Narwin and at least try to figure out why she thought he was suspended.

  72. if I were Phillip Malloy, I would call Dr. P, Dr. D and Narwin and talk to them about how I didn't know what was happening but I could help fix it. Also, this phone call could help Phillip get out of his "teacher troubles". Then I would talk to the reporter again and make her re-tell the TRUE story to all those she lied to. I have felt like Phillip before. Feeling like the whole world is against me and I have no way out of it.
