Stand and Deliver!

Today, you shared your symbols for the characters within Nothing but the Truth. Symbols like: fire, snapping turtles, storms, cooking pots, slippery slides, and many more filled your artistic pages and I loved hearing your ideas and your analysis of why these characters could be symbolized so.

Then, we dove into Chapter 16 of our novel and found that Miss Narwin is getting a whole host of hate mail--much of it containing half-truths.

For tonight, be sure to read up to the start of Chapter 17 in the novel (for most versions of the book, this will be page 200).

After you read, share your insights on this question: How can people hold onto what they know to be true in the face of hatred or anger from many others? And how do people know when to change their ideas or stick to them?

Consider the characters in our novel, and why they choose to stand firm or else change their ideas. How do they determine which is the right course to take. How do YOU?

Our word for the day was DORMANT, which is an adjective that means 'a state of being at rest, but possessing the capability for action. And example of the word in a line is: Sometimes, we all possess the capacity to love deeply, but it lies dormant due to fear or hurt.

  2. I think it depends on who you are getting angry with. For example, if I got angry at my best friend or my parents, I would probably change my idea as they are close to me and they mean the world to me. If it was someone I despise, I would stick with my answer.

  3. i think once a person thinks they are right they stick with it and don't let it go until they are proven wrong by facts

  4. Many people hold on to what they believe to be true even if their faced with direct opposing evidence, and probably won't change what they think unless others don't belive it anymore too.

  5. I think that people are able to hold onto what they believe is true only if they truly, truly, believe what they think is true; otherwise it may change slightly as others express what they believe is true.

  6. They might know when to change there ideas is when they get a new or they just have a feeling that maybe they know something that is better. How the can stick with there ideas is when the really believe that that idea will work. Maybe they can hold on to what is true is that, that might be the only evidence.

  7. Most of the characters in the book stay with the first thing that they hear, especially the reporters. For the reporters, the first thing that they hear will get their paper/TV show out there.

  8. I think people can hold on what they know to be true by knowing and staying confident that what they know is true. People know when to change or keep their ides when they are confident about their idea or not.Sometimes people will change their ideas because everyone else is saying something different than they are.

  9. People can hold on to the truth even when faced with hatred because they believe in themselves and their knowledge firmly (at first) more than how much they believe in others. People know when to change their minds and to stick with them mostly because of their gut, how much trust they have in themselves, and other things that they know to be true (like if someone else knows more, they would probably change and go with their answer).

  10. When people are filled with hatred and anger, you are not going to be able to change them to be the way you want them to be. So you have to excuse them and their ignorance, and continue to stick up for what you know is true and right. Only people that will listen, and not be ignorant, will be able to decide on when to change their ideas or stick with them.

  11. Most people believe the first thing that they hear about the story. I think that it is really hard for a person to change their mind after they have decided something. They will need a really strong argument that's truly believable in order for them to change their mind.

  12. People can hold on to what they think to be true, even in the face of hatred and anger from others, by not paying mind to all the negatives. At my last school, on my bus, I was always the crazy type who never could shut her mouth. People constantly would tease me for my off behavior in contrast to how I normally acted in class. I learned that however I wanted to act was the way I was going to act, so I didn't pay attention to the snide comments anymore. You can also hold on to what you believe while others doubt you by being friends with the ones that support, and maybe even agree, with what you think. Back to my old bus, I never would have been able to be who I was without my best bud who was as crazy as me.
People should only change their minds on something they truly believe when what you believe in isn't doing anyone, yourself or others, any good. Someone may believe that stealing and committing crimes is the right way to go in life. One day, that same person may look at all the damage they've done to everyone including themselves and learn that what they believe in may not be the correct path for anyone. That moment could be an epiphany for them, cause them to change their life around. That is why only you should control what you believe is true, and you should not allow others opinions to affect yours.

  13. I think that if someone believes in something, they will sometimes hold onto it and stay confident about it no matter what anyone else says. However, many people will just go along with what everyone else thinks, even if they know in their heart that its not true

  14. I think that if someone really feels that something is true, they will fight against others, but if they aren't 100% sure, they may not argue as much. People will know when to change/stick to their ideas based on other people's opinions.

  15. Most people will stand up for their belief. It is natural. If someone comes up to you and says that what you believe in is wrong, you are naturally going to try and defend your case that you are right and you and all people will try to "back up" their point that they are correct. I Philips case it is kind of hard to choose what side he is one. Now that he has been kicked out of Miss Narwin's class he is caught in the middle between school, track, the press, and his social life.

  16. I think that it depends on how loyal the person is; if the person is really loyal then they will be willing to die for their cause, and if they're not a very loyal person then they could be able to be talked out of believing in their cause.

  17. I think that it is very easy to switch opinions or sides due to other people reactions.

  18. They will hold onto that if the truly believe in it and if the are confident in their response. Though, some people will change according to the majority vote and will try to just go with it to try to be a "cool" person and to agree with everyone else.

  21. I think when you believe something is right you will stick to it and never stop believing in it. what keeps you doing this is when you have a gut feeling inside of you that you know you are right and will be right, so you don't give it up.

  23. I think that it depends on how sure they are of themselves and what they believe to be true. If they are not very sure of themselves they might be persuaded to change what they think but if they are sure of it they will hold on as long as they can.

  24. I think to hold onto the truth or what they know even when people are angry or hate you, you need to use all the anger built up inside you and stand up for yourself, and prove to everyone that they have no reason to be mad. I think people know when to stick or change there story when things get really bad and when everyone is sticking one persons side of the story.

  27. i think if someone really believes that they are right and they don't listen to everyone else then they would stick to what they believed in the first place. i think if they are not positive about what they think then someone might be able to convince them that they are wrong.

  28. I think that if their belief is really important to them and they feel that it is the onlt right belief in the world, they will keep believing it no matter what. But if they aren't quite sure or are guessing, they will almost always change their beliefs so they are like everyone else.

  29. If a person has strong beliefs in something it helps to be in a supporting environment, however if not in such an environment the person should have something that keeps them from swaying towards the other side, a passion, hobby or job, something that makes them happy and confident that whatever it is is true.

  30. People hold on to what is true by knowing and believing. It is similar to the study about the lines you showed us. There were some people who knew that line B was the answer so they said it. Because they were confident. People who are more shy and aren't as confident tend to go with the crowd. A person will really only change their mind if they see evidence and/or persuaded.

  33. in the novel the characters determine which right course to take by what other people say(like a reporter, friend, or family). I say this because most people usually trust their piers and family and smart people. I think that I would probably come to a conclusion if someone that I know or trust told me what they say, heard etc. but i also would like it if more than just one person i trust was their and they would also tell me.

  34. If a person believes an idea strongly enough than almost nothing could change their mind. I also agree with Alondra that if so many of the people you trust or look up to believe something there is a good chance you would believe it too.

  35. When a person believes something strongly enough then almost nothing could change their mind. I also agree with Alondra by if someone that you trust says what they think there is a pretty good chance that you will agree, especially if enough people believe that answer.

  36. I think that the characters in the novel determine which is the right course to take, by looking at the consequences. So far, each decision made was to protect themselves. They are each in favor of their selves. So to speak, each story is slanted to fit the perfection of each characters protection. I think people should make decisions based on the real story. Not whats the best option for themselves.

  37. I think it really depends whose opinion is different from yours. If it is someone who you are close to you like family or friends, people might change their opinion easier even if they are sure they are correct. I think you should change your opinion only if it is someone you truly believe is correct, more correct than your own.

  38. I think that if someone truly believes in something, they will mainly stick to it. There are always things that can persuade them. For example, the study you showed us where the people who knew with all their heart that the answer was number three, they were swayed towards number two because of the group count. But if a person can stick to it, then that shows that they really and truly believe in it.

  39. i think that is someone believe something is true and know it for a fact, then no one will be able to change their mind. But if someone is not so sure about something and doesnt know if they are 100% positive, then their minds can be changed easily.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think someone believes something 100% until proven wrong and even then sometimes they need more proof to say that they are indeed wrong. Even if it's only for a millisecond. But that's only if their mind is made up. If their mind isn't yet made up, then sometimes it will be easy and other times difficult to persuade them to make up their minds.

  41. I decide the right course to take by seeing what everybody else is doing because most of the time what everyone else is doing is not the thing I want or should be doing. Also, I think about what will happen in the future and I don't like the outcome,, then I change what I was planning on or thinking of doing. and finally, if I really need it and I cant decide which path to take, I ask a teacher or someone I know really cares about me and has dealt with the same situation before. I stand firmly in what I believe in because I know it is right and I am the only one who could change my mind.

  43. in the novel and in real life, you are only able to use your known facts to make judgements. the problem with this is you dont nessacarily know ALL the facts required to state whose side you are on.

  44. I think people will believe their way of a story even if they know it is wrong. The only way they will change their opinion is if they are proven completely wrong by evidence. Sometimes even then they might not change their opinion.

  46. People stick with their ideas and what they believe to be true for one main reason; they're stubborn and hate to admit they're wrong. One of the worst feelings is when you're sky high with something you believe in, then, someone comes from nowhere and proves you wrong crashing you back to Earth. Then, you either have to act ignorant and stick with what you believe or admit you were wrong to the person that brought you down. I believe by just taking some time to cool down, you can ponder for a while and think about just why you were wrong. My philosophy is that by doing this you'll be more prepared to admit defeat and 'kneel' before the other person.
