Thus far in our reading of Nothing But the Truth by Avi, we have characterized Miss Narwin as very strict and somewhat uptight. Yet she does have a lot of passion for literature and teaching, as some of you astutely pointed out!
As the plot thickens in our novel, we are beginning to see tensions develop, and tomorrow we'll continue acting out scenes from the novel.
As we begin to think about Phillip and Miss Narwin--along with the other characters--share a few insights regarding this question: Would you want Phillip Malloy as a friend of yours? Why or why not?
Our word of the day today is SUBTERFUGE, which means a great deception or trick.
See you tomorrow, and peace!
Mr. R
I think he would be a funny friend and there wouldn't be many dull moments. I guess I would be okay with being his friend but some of his jokes are weird and disgusting.
ReplyDeleteI would probably not want Phillip as my friend. He seems very over confident, and very self centered. Which are not good qualities for a friend. He does not seem friendly, and kind. Or trustful. He also seems like someone who would talk behind your back.
ReplyDeleteI would not want to be friends with Phillip. Phillip has awkward interactions with people and is very rude. Those two characteristics combined do not create a very kind, and trustworthy friend.
ReplyDeleteNo because he is way to full of him self.
ReplyDeletejake
i would not want phillip malloy as my freind because its seems he also brags how good he is at runner
ReplyDeletehe seems like he would make a ok friend since he likes to make jokes but he doesn't have many great qualities.
ReplyDeleteYes and no. I would like to be his friend because he is funny, but would not like to be his friend because it sounds like he doesn't get work done.
ReplyDeleteYes i would like Philip as a friend even though he seems like he is so selfish I think he seems like a good kid and he isn't afraid to share his ideas talk to girls and or express how he feels
ReplyDeletei would not want Philip Malloy as a friend because he seema a bit like a trouble maker and is rubbing me the wrong way with some of the things he says.
ReplyDeleteYes i would like Philip as a friend even though he seems like he is so selfish I think he seems like a good kid and he isn't afraid to share his ideas talk to girls and or express how he feels
ReplyDeleteI probably wouldn't want to be friends with Phillip. He seems very rude and sometimes insulting at times. At times I think he would be funny, but at other times not so much. We both have two very different personalities.
ReplyDeleteI would not want Phillip Malloy as my friend because he seems like the kind of kid who would talk in class while other people are trying to work. I strongly dislike these people because they're immature and distract people who actually care about school with their talking. Also, his jokes aren't really that funny and are slightly offensive.
ReplyDeleteYes and no. He seem to be a funny kid and i would like that. But he doesn't seem to get good grades and i wouldn't want to be hanging around a kid who fools around in class
ReplyDeleteI would want Philip Malloy as my friend because he is funny and I like his jokes. He seems like he would fit in with my friends.
ReplyDeleteI would want Phil as a friend because he seems very playful and not a trouble maker just a jokster because he was still studying in homeroom.
ReplyDeleteI think I would like Phillip as a friend, because there would never be a dull moment, and he seems like a cool person with strong opinions and ideas.
ReplyDelete~Dharma
Yes, because he feels confident to express ideas to others and is a joker. He would make a good, confident friend that doesn't care what others think about him.
ReplyDeletei would not want Philip Malloy as my friend because he seems to be very self-centered and doesn't really seem to care about others to much.
ReplyDeleteNo, Phil would not be a good friend for me. Just by the way the his diary is written it sounds like he is in it for the coolness, a quality I don't like. It seems he would rather fight for popularity with his jokes than do anything for or with me. Additionally, figuring out who you would like as a friend will perpetually help you if you are trying to become friendlier.
ReplyDeletePhilip has a wide range of different qualities. He is funny, which is a thing I like in a friend, but he seems to be arrogant, and reckless. He also doesn't care about school, which won't get him far in life. So there are some things that would make him a good friend, and some that wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteI would want Philip Malloy as a friend because he seems funny. One problem with him is that he seems too full of himself.
ReplyDeleteno i would not want to be friends with Philip because he seems conceited and does not really care about whats important. -Gia McCabe
ReplyDeleteHe would make an ok friend since he's funny, but he doesn't seem very trustworthy and is a little full of himself which is annoying.
ReplyDeletei would not want phillp as a friend because he is very self-centered and thinks very much of himself. Also Mr. Reynolds has mentioned that he is part of a big problem and i would not want to be part of that.
ReplyDeleteI would want him as a friend and i dont want him as a friend. I would not want Philip Malloy as a friend because his is a bragger and he could give some of the qualities he has to others. I also dont want him as a friend becasue he could be untrustworthy and behind your back he could make fun of you. I would want to be his friend because he tries to make funny jokes and he expresses how he fells for others.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would want to be friends with Philip Malloy because he seems pretty arrogant and a like a troublemaker so far. That's not the type of a person I would want to be friends with, but we haven't seen a lot of him yet, since we just started the book (meaning he could have some better qualities we haven't discovered yet).
ReplyDeleteI would consider everyone a friend, as I despise considering somebody a complete stranger/enemy. Philip seems to have both good and bad character traits, but treating others as a friend would be better rather than pretending they don't exist.
ReplyDeleteMatthew Atwell
ReplyDeleteI would be friends with Phillip Malloy because he has a sense of humor, is intelligent, and seems like a good person.
Would you want Phillip Malloy as a friend of yours? Why or why not?
ReplyDeleteI would call Phillip Malloy an acquaintance at most. Although he has a great sense of humor, he just doesn't seem like a very sensitive and empathetic person. He seems more arrogant than anything else, especially about his athleticism. Based on all of this, a friend isn't something I would call Phillip Malloy.
I would not be friends with Philip Malloy. He seems to be a bad influence and could cause me to become a bad person. He does not look like I would get many benefits from him, only negativity.
ReplyDeleteI would to be friends with Philip! I really enjoy people you can make me laugh and put a smile on my face. He's also very relatable when it comes to doing your homework in homeroom lol just kidding. ;)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the only downside to him being a friend would probably be him getting in trouble quite frequently. Also some of the things he thinks are a little bit different from my thoughts, like about how he hates literature and loves math.
It's the opposite for me.
I would not like Phillip as a friend because he seems arrogant, and self centered. In a friendship, its not a one way show, both friends should be able to respect each other. He doesn't seem like a nice person, although he may be funny he acts mean and disrespectful.
ReplyDeleteIt really depends, I think this because even when he is expressing his feelings, sometimes that could be good and bad. Also it depends on the way he treats his peers. So if he didn't treat them nicely, I wouldn't want to be friends with Phillip.
ReplyDeleteI would not want to be friends with Philip Malloy. This is because I feel he is a bit too standoffish. I think he is overly confident with himself and all he cares about is girls and his running. I don't think he would be a very trusty friend or a good role model.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be my friend because I'd probably find him bothersome and annoying, as well as he seems to be a nuisance in class.
ReplyDeleteEven though he does not seem like an ideal friend, if I was forced to be his friend I would be okay with it. He is not a bad person. He is funny and willing to work hard for what he wants. However, his lack of effort towards things that he doesn't want to do makes him harder to like. If I were to choose a friend it probably wouldn't be Phillip Malloy.
ReplyDeleteI would and would not want Philip to be my friend. I would want him to be a friend because he has a good sense of humor and we have the sport track in common. I would not want him to be my friend because like most people have already said, Philip is full of himself and seems to be rude towards teachers.
ReplyDeleteI would no want him as a friend he got into a little bit of trouble and was very weird
ReplyDelete-Matt Hendricks
I probably wouldn't want Phillip Malloy as my friend because he is full of himself, and doesn't seem to be open minded at all. Some of the things that Phillip says don't really appeal to me as kind, but more like he is bragging and just being impertinent. I don't think that he would be a great friend, but I guess we COULD be ok friends.
ReplyDeleteI not sure if i would like to be Philip Malloy as my friend. He seem a little bit like a trouble maker and also a really nice kid. I feel like he would not be a loyal friend to have by your side.
ReplyDelete~Annie Segaloff
I would because he seems like a nice kid who is a little full of himself, but is a nice well rounded kid.
ReplyDeleteI think I would like Philip Malloy as a friend but at the same time I wouldn't. I mean, he seems pretty funny and a good person to be around, but he also seems like he wouldn't be a very trustworthy friend.
ReplyDeletedue to Philips actions as a student, i don't think that i would like him as a friend, i see him as a sum what reckless human being, all though i would mind being acquaintances with Philip.
ReplyDeletePeace
I think hes a weirdo. But to be honest, we all have a bit of weirdo inside us. Not only is he a weirdo, hes bold, athletic and enjoys doing math. Although some people may not want him as their friend, because hes a bit weird, or a trouble maker or for whatever reason, I think that I wouldn't mind having a friend like Philip. You cant let those small things get in the way because everyone has a beautiful side of life and you can really respect that nature. Although i'm not as familiar with Philip because I have not read the entire book, from what I currently know, he sounds like a kid. So to basically sum up this really large paragraph, yes. Philip Malloy is a friend of mine.

ReplyDeleteI would love him as a friend. one reason is that we have not read the book for that far and I don't wan t to judge. secondly, he seems like he gets into trouble and I feel like one day we would go on an adventure running from cops all in good mind set and we would get the bad guy like in the movies.... or maybe something less dramatic. - Andrea Bradshaw
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I probably wouldn't be very good friends with Philip Malloy. We have very different senses of humor, he seems a bit solipsistic, and he's quite a troublemaker. I could try, but I'm not quite sure I would get along with him.
ReplyDeletePhillip seems like a good person, he seems to have a bad reputation though. he seems to really have a weird pint of view about things, and seems to be self centered. but the only point of view that we really get into is his journal, and when you wright in your journal (i think) you end up being self centered.
ReplyDeleteI would not want Phillip Malloy as my friend because he is egotistical and very rude to not only girls but teachers
ReplyDeleteyes he seems pretty funny
ReplyDeletePhilip seems like an ok friend because he can be really funny and have a fun prescience. On the other hand he could be a bit full of himself in a way or over confident. This would make him not as good as a friend.
ReplyDeleteI would want Philip Malloy as my friend because he seems funny and seems like he has a good personality, sure he's a little socially awkward sometimes, but I don't really see anything wrong with him.
ReplyDeleteI would like Philip as a friend because he's funny and would make me laugh. He isn't scared to express his opinion and isn't influenced by anyone else. This confidence is serves you well in life when you have to go up against people for jobs and other stuff. I don't think he's a bad kid but just isn't good in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI would have Philip be my friend because he is sort of funny and isn't a mean person also he studies witch is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I wouldn't want Phillip as a friend because of the fact that he is one of those kids that will try to play tricks on teachers for fun.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want Phillip Malloy as a friend because he's like the class clown of the grade. A real wisecracker, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI would not want to be friends with Philip because he seems that he is not to focused on work but I would want to be his a distant friend because he seems like a funny person.
ReplyDeleteI am undecided if I want Phillip as my friend. There are pros and cons of what kind of friend he could be. He seems a little selfish but is also funny.
ReplyDeleteI would love for Phillip to be my friend. He is audacious and willing to stand up for what he thinks and is just a very amusing guy.
ReplyDeleteI would want to have Phillip as my friend, as he is a funny and happy kind of guy. It seems that he would be able to make any day a good day, just the kind of thing that you want a friend to have.
ReplyDeleteI would like to have Philip as my friend. This is because he is a lot lime my other friends and would understand me
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want Phillip as a friend due to how he is generally full of himself. He has some qualities I can agree with and others I don't agree with. I value people with good humor and a sense of respect which differs in Phillips personality. Although I can say that I respect that he is willing to speak his mind but I don't see as if we would be very good friends. ~Jessica DiPIetro
ReplyDeleteI would like Phillip to be my friend, because he seems kind in his own way, funny, and is probably a good person. Sure, he's sometimes rude/ not a really good worker/ and a troublemaker, but he means well and I could really get along with him.
ReplyDeleteI would not mind having Phillip as a friend because he seems to be funny and bold, even though he sounds self-centered and mean at times. Some of my friends are like that anyways. I just choose to look at the good side of people.
ReplyDeleteI would want to have Phillip Malloy has my friend. He seems funny, athletic, and cool. I do think that he might get me in trouble but i also feel like I would have a lot of fun with him.
ReplyDeleteIdk if I'd be his friend...okay, yes, he seems okay...but he thinks so lowly of girls (sometimes). If I was his friend, he might just assume I have a crush on him or some other dumb thing. And then BOOM ten pages of me in his diary. And ALL. ABOUT. GIRLS. FALLING. HEAD. OVER. HEELS. FOR. HIM. Which is NOT true! Okay, he seems like he has funny jokes, but his answer on his test? I mean, I dont think he's really focused on his work. And he KNOWS if he fails, he can't be on the track team. And yet he claims he wants to be an olympian. If he wants it so badly, he should actually TRY to do his work. Plus, his flirting skills need MAJOR work, not that I know how to help lol
ReplyDeleteplus I don't need to hear him cracking stupid 'jokes' and annoying the teachers in general.
I mean, we aren't allowed to do homework during homeroom (you know, when there are ANNOUNCEMENTS!), he doesn't need to go all out Persassy mode on his teacher! Ugh, it's his fault for not doing the homework, he should be responsible and honest at least. He seems kind of dubious, I wouldn't trust him with anything, whether it was a pencil, or a secret crush and what-not.
Plus, who doesn't like books?!
I would not be opposed to Philp being my friend, but I would not befriend him myself. I feel like he is a good person but we have different tastes. I enjoy English, were as he dislikes it with a passion. He is very outgoing and stands up for what he thinks is right and I can respect that, so I think we would just be acquaintances and not quite friends. -Kaitlyn Ostrowski
ReplyDeleteI would like Philip to be my fiend because he seems like the kind of guy to make everything fun
ReplyDeleteI don't think that I would want Phillip as a friend, but I'm not sure. I don't really know what he's like, but he seems like he just tries to get into trouble. He looks irresponsible, and rather vain. The only reason I'm not sure is because he does seem to have a good sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteI would probably like Philip as a friend. He has a great and up beat attitude, also he may not be very attentive but it's the personality that counts. :)
ReplyDeleteI would want Phillip to be my friend because he seems like a very funny person and he doesn't get influenced or swayed by other people.
ReplyDeletePhillip Malloy wouldn't be my friend because he takes his sports over his grades, he doesn't pay attention to the announcements and overall sounds like a creep in the conversation on the phone with Alison Dorsett. Those thing make me think he doesn't take school seriously, which he should because it will make a difference to what scholarship you get for college or the college you go to.
ReplyDeleteI think I would be friends with Phillip. I think this because there wouldn't be any dull moment with him, and he would keep the conversation upbeat. Although, I would have to get used to his somewhat inappropriate jokes, I can see myself and him being acquaintances.
ReplyDeleteProbably, he seems like a nice person but I would have to get to know him better.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth Cohen
I don't think i would like phillip as a friend because he seems to weird and kind of rude, but there could be other sids to phillip that we haven't seen yet, so i don't know. -Erik Dahlstrom
ReplyDeleteNo I would not because it seems that he doesn't take his school work that seriously.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't think that i would have liked Philip because he seems rude and conceited sometimes.
ReplyDeletejack yu
I think I wouldn't like to have Phillip as a friend because he is to full of himself. He doesn't respect teachers as much as he should, and he is a class clown.
ReplyDeletei think i would like to have him as a friend because he seems to always be making jokes Jason Morin
ReplyDeleteI would not like Phillip as a refrain because he like a more socially awkward and annoying version of me
