The Plot Thickens...

Thus far in our reading of Nothing But the Truth by Avi, we have characterized Miss Narwin as very strict and somewhat uptight. Yet she does have a lot of passion for literature and teaching, as some of you astutely pointed out!

As the plot thickens in our novel, we are beginning to see tensions develop, and tomorrow we'll continue acting out scenes from the novel.

As we begin to think about Phillip and Miss Narwin--along with the other characters--share a few insights regarding this question: Would you want Phillip Malloy as a friend of yours? Why or why not?

Our word of the day today is SUBTERFUGE, which means a great deception or trick.

See you tomorrow, and peace!

Mr. R

  1. I think he would be a funny friend and there wouldn't be many dull moments. I guess I would be okay with being his friend but some of his jokes are weird and disgusting.

  2. I would probably not want Phillip as my friend. He seems very over confident, and very self centered. Which are not good qualities for a friend. He does not seem friendly, and kind. Or trustful. He also seems like someone who would talk behind your back.

  3. I would not want to be friends with Phillip. Phillip has awkward interactions with people and is very rude. Those two characteristics combined do not create a very kind, and trustworthy friend.

  4. No because he is way to full of him self.

  11. I probably wouldn't want to be friends with Phillip. He seems very rude and sometimes insulting at times. At times I think he would be funny, but at other times not so much. We both have two very different personalities.

  12. I would not want Phillip Malloy as my friend because he seems like the kind of kid who would talk in class while other people are trying to work. I strongly dislike these people because they're immature and distract people who actually care about school with their talking. Also, his jokes aren't really that funny and are slightly offensive.

  13. Yes and no. He seem to be a funny kid and i would like that. But he doesn't seem to get good grades and i wouldn't want to be hanging around a kid who fools around in class

  15. I would want Phil as a friend because he seems very playful and not a trouble maker just a jokster because he was still studying in homeroom.

  17. Yes, because he feels confident to express ideas to others and is a joker. He would make a good, confident friend that doesn't care what others think about him.

  18. i would not want Philip Malloy as my friend because he seems to be very self-centered and doesn't really seem to care about others to much.

  19. No, Phil would not be a good friend for me. Just by the way the his diary is written it sounds like he is in it for the coolness, a quality I don't like. It seems he would rather fight for popularity with his jokes than do anything for or with me. Additionally, figuring out who you would like as a friend will perpetually help you if you are trying to become friendlier.

  20. Philip has a wide range of different qualities. He is funny, which is a thing I like in a friend, but he seems to be arrogant, and reckless. He also doesn't care about school, which won't get him far in life. So there are some things that would make him a good friend, and some that wouldn't.

  21. I would want Philip Malloy as a friend because he seems funny. One problem with him is that he seems too full of himself.

  24. i would not want phillp as a friend because he is very self-centered and thinks very much of himself. Also Mr. Reynolds has mentioned that he is part of a big problem and i would not want to be part of that.

  25. I would want him as a friend and i dont want him as a friend. I would not want Philip Malloy as a friend because his is a bragger and he could give some of the qualities he has to others. I also dont want him as a friend becasue he could be untrustworthy and behind your back he could make fun of you. I would want to be his friend because he tries to make funny jokes and he expresses how he fells for others.

  26. I don't think I would want to be friends with Philip Malloy because he seems pretty arrogant and a like a troublemaker so far. That's not the type of a person I would want to be friends with, but we haven't seen a lot of him yet, since we just started the book (meaning he could have some better qualities we haven't discovered yet).

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would consider everyone a friend, as I despise considering somebody a complete stranger/enemy. Philip seems to have both good and bad character traits, but treating others as a friend would be better rather than pretending they don't exist.

I would be friends with Phillip Malloy because he has a sense of humor, is intelligent, and seems like a good person.

  29. Would you want Phillip Malloy as a friend of yours? Why or why not?

I would call Phillip Malloy an acquaintance at most. Although he has a great sense of humor, he just doesn't seem like a very sensitive and empathetic person. He seems more arrogant than anything else, especially about his athleticism. Based on all of this, a friend isn't something I would call Phillip Malloy.

  30. I would not be friends with Philip Malloy. He seems to be a bad influence and could cause me to become a bad person. He does not look like I would get many benefits from him, only negativity.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would to be friends with Philip! I really enjoy people you can make me laugh and put a smile on my face. He's also very relatable when it comes to doing your homework in homeroom lol just kidding. ;)

Anyway, the only downside to him being a friend would probably be him getting in trouble quite frequently. Also some of the things he thinks are a little bit different from my thoughts, like about how he hates literature and loves math.
    It's the opposite for me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would not like Phillip as a friend because he seems arrogant, and self centered. In a friendship, its not a one way show, both friends should be able to respect each other. He doesn't seem like a nice person, although he may be funny he acts mean and disrespectful.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It really depends, I think this because even when he is expressing his feelings, sometimes that could be good and bad. Also it depends on the way he treats his peers. So if he didn't treat them nicely, I wouldn't want to be friends with Phillip.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would not want to be friends with Philip Malloy. This is because I feel he is a bit too standoffish. I think he is overly confident with himself and all he cares about is girls and his running. I don't think he would be a very trusty friend or a good role model.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I wouldn't be my friend because I'd probably find him bothersome and annoying, as well as he seems to be a nuisance in class.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Even though he does not seem like an ideal friend, if I was forced to be his friend I would be okay with it. He is not a bad person. He is funny and willing to work hard for what he wants. However, his lack of effort towards things that he doesn't want to do makes him harder to like. If I were to choose a friend it probably wouldn't be Phillip Malloy.

  37. I would and would not want Philip to be my friend. I would want him to be a friend because he has a good sense of humor and we have the sport track in common. I would not want him to be my friend because like most people have already said, Philip is full of himself and seems to be rude towards teachers.

  39. I probably wouldn't want Phillip Malloy as my friend because he is full of himself, and doesn't seem to be open minded at all. Some of the things that Phillip says don't really appeal to me as kind, but more like he is bragging and just being impertinent. I don't think that he would be a great friend, but I guess we COULD be ok friends.

  43. due to Philips actions as a student, i don't think that i would like him as a friend, i see him as a sum what reckless human being, all though i would mind being acquaintances with Philip.

  44. I think hes a weirdo. But to be honest, we all have a bit of weirdo inside us. Not only is he a weirdo, hes bold, athletic and enjoys doing math. Although some people may not want him as their friend, because hes a bit weird, or a trouble maker or for whatever reason, I think that I wouldn't mind having a friend like Philip. You cant let those small things get in the way because everyone has a beautiful side of life and you can really respect that nature. Although i'm not as familiar with Philip because I have not read the entire book, from what I currently know, he sounds like a kid. So to basically sum up this really large paragraph, yes. Philip Malloy is a friend of mine.

  46. I would love him as a friend. one reason is that we have not read the book for that far and I don't wan t to judge. secondly, he seems like he gets into trouble and I feel like one day we would go on an adventure running from cops all in good mind set and we would get the bad guy like in the movies.... or maybe something less dramatic. - Andrea Bradshaw

  47. Honestly, I probably wouldn't be very good friends with Philip Malloy. We have very different senses of humor, he seems a bit solipsistic, and he's quite a troublemaker. I could try, but I'm not quite sure I would get along with him.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Phillip seems like a good person, he seems to have a bad reputation though. he seems to really have a weird pint of view about things, and seems to be self centered. but the only point of view that we really get into is his journal, and when you wright in your journal (i think) you end up being self centered.

  62. I wouldn't want Phillip as a friend due to how he is generally full of himself. He has some qualities I can agree with and others I don't agree with. I value people with good humor and a sense of respect which differs in Phillips personality. Although I can say that I respect that he is willing to speak his mind but I don't see as if we would be very good friends. ~Jessica DiPIetro

  66. Idk if I'd be his friend...okay, yes, he seems okay...but he thinks so lowly of girls (sometimes). If I was his friend, he might just assume I have a crush on him or some other dumb thing. And then BOOM ten pages of me in his diary. And ALL. ABOUT. GIRLS. FALLING. HEAD. OVER. HEELS. FOR. HIM. Which is NOT true! Okay, he seems like he has funny jokes, but his answer on his test? I mean, I dont think he's really focused on his work. And he KNOWS if he fails, he can't be on the track team. And yet he claims he wants to be an olympian. If he wants it so badly, he should actually TRY to do his work. Plus, his flirting skills need MAJOR work, not that I know how to help lol
plus I don't need to hear him cracking stupid 'jokes' and annoying the teachers in general.
I mean, we aren't allowed to do homework during homeroom (you know, when there are ANNOUNCEMENTS!), he doesn't need to go all out Persassy mode on his teacher! Ugh, it's his fault for not doing the homework, he should be responsible and honest at least. He seems kind of dubious, I wouldn't trust him with anything, whether it was a pencil, or a secret crush and what-not.
    Plus, who doesn't like books?!

  67. I would not be opposed to Philp being my friend, but I would not befriend him myself. I feel like he is a good person but we have different tastes. I enjoy English, were as he dislikes it with a passion. He is very outgoing and stands up for what he thinks is right and I can respect that, so I think we would just be acquaintances and not quite friends. -Kaitlyn Ostrowski

  72. Phillip Malloy wouldn't be my friend because he takes his sports over his grades, he doesn't pay attention to the announcements and overall sounds like a creep in the conversation on the phone with Alison Dorsett. Those thing make me think he doesn't take school seriously, which he should because it will make a difference to what scholarship you get for college or the college you go to.
