Hidden Disobedience

Our novel, The Breadwinner, is getting intense. In chapter 6, we see the courageous (and dangerous) thing Parvana is asked to do by Mrs. Weera and her mother. Even though Parvana will be breaking the laws of the Taliban if she goes ahead with their plan, she will be accomplishing a greater good for her family.

This act of disobeying an unjust law is called CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. In American history, many brave people have participated in civil disobedience, including Henry David Thoreau, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks.

As you watch Parvana begin her disobedience--which we might actually call hidden disobedience, since her goal is actually for NO ONE to find out except her family--do you think it will make a difference?

And furthermore: do you think acts of civil or hidden disobedience can change the world? For example, when people disobey unjust laws, do you think that changes actual society and laws? Why or why not? Share your ideas below!

(And our word of the day today is IRK, which means to annoy, as in this example: It irks many people when loud trumpet blasts are blown into their ears as they are trying to eat dinner.)

  1. I think civil disobedience will change the world because hidden disobedience could mean people are doing bad things they are trying to hide and civil means that your disobeying they law by what is right. If more people do civil disobedience then maybe the law will change or maybe more people will know what it's right.

  2. I think that civil disobedience can change the world. Whereas Parvana is commuting both, nobody would know that the is a girl (hidden disobedience). Civil disobedience may be able to overthrow a power, if more people are committing it te government might notice and make a change.

  3. Parvana's way is not exactly going to make a difference except for her family. If she went a little bit more public she would make a difference. But it will change her to be more courage which will lead her to make a difference for the world. And these acts of hidden disobedience can lead to perhaps spreading the message, to join forces and fight against them.

  4. I think it will make a difference but just to her family, because if no one knows she is actually a girl than what difference will it make to them? But if every one had some kind of hidden disobedience then yes it would make a difference because every one would be doing something wrong.

  5. I think Parvana will inspire other families to do what she's doing. I think that will create a kind of uprising against the Taliban. I believe that civil disobedience can change the world, like in the case of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.

  7. Yes, I think that it would make a big difference because you are different on the outside, so people treat you differently that way. Parvana's family would treat her the same or even with more respect because of what she did to help her family.

  8. I think they can change the world because just standing up to an unjust law can open other peoples eyes to the fact that the law is wrong and they should fight against it.

  9. I think that when someone disobeys a bad law, like how Parvana goes outside without a male and earns money, and enough people are disobeying these laws, it could change the government to get rid of them.

  10. Yes,I do think that Parvana disobeying the law will make a difference, for her family. If she didn't go out and pretend to be a boy, her family would starve to death. they would have no way to get food, and no way to earn money to buy food. It makes a difference in the entire well being of her family, definitely. And yes, I do think that civil and hidden disobedience can make a difference in the world at large. Take Rosa Parks, for example. She didn't start out wanting to disobey the law like that. She didn't even know she was going to do that act on the bus. She did start out with hidden disobedience though, having her private opinions about segregation. But when she refused to sit in the back of the bus that one day, that was civil disobedience, and it did change the way a lot of people thought about segregation.

  11. I think that acts of civil disobedience can change the world. I think that if one person disobeys unjust laws, it can give other people the courage to stand up against it too. I think that if enough people stand up against it, the group of bad people might lose some supporters or more people will fight against it.

  12. I think that it changes society is a way that no one is who they really seem. It feels more mysterious. It might not make a difference in how the market runs our the bakery, but it affects the way people feel towards each other. It can also bring people together. They are all trying to hide for one cause.

  13. I think Parvana's actions will make a difference because it will help her family and they will appreciate that and that can change their feelings and opinions. I think hidden disobedience CAN change the world because it can tear apart family and friendships which can lead to bigger problems in society which in reality can/could eventually change the world.

  14. I think it would be bad if anyone but her family/friends found out that she isn't actualy a boy because they might tell the Taliban.

  16. I think it will make a difference that Parvana doesn't want anyone except her family to know about her disguise because if people do find out than she will be severely punished by the Taliban, leaving no one to care for the family without her father. I do think it is necessary and important for everyday people to make reasonable acts of disobedience because unjust laws can only be stopped if people make a big enough stand against them. Basically one person will lead to more and, more voices are more powerful and have the ability to change a rule or law.

  18. I do believe that civil or hidden disobedience can change the world. I think that they have the potential to change the world because if enough people catch on, the law makers will have to give in. Also, over time, more people will join in and make that population of rebels larger, and stronger because they have the guts and will to stand their ground and fight.

  19. I think it will make a difference if it isn't a secret that she is dressing like a boy, because if one person finds out, and that person tells someone else, that person could tell a guard, and the guards could storm their apartment again. I think it changes the world when people disobey unjust laws, because if no one follows the law, the government will have no more power.

  23. I think it will make a difference that she did not tell anyone because then if one day she does not feel like doing her goal there will be no one to help her keep going or tell her she needs to keep going. I do think that acts of civil or hidden disobedience can change the world because people would get used to disobeying and would keep doing it. And eventually everyone would do it. And the laws would mean nothing because everyone wouldn't follow them and they cannot arrest everyone.

  24. I don't think think it will make a difference because there are probably other people who have to do what Parvana is doing, but it is very courageous for her to do this. I don't think it changes laws when somebody disobeys them. they probably don't change because they are laws and aren't changed for one person.

  25. I think that hidden disobedience can change the world because many people are transforming their girl child into a a boy. It changed the world because it has turned into the lifestyle of many children and families. If this is one of the things that is hidden disobedience that we know about, imagine how many other things that have been hidden, transforming peoples lives.

  26. No I think acts of civil or hidden disobedience changes the world. I think this because if someone is breaking the law in a well governed country because they think its the right thing to do, it wont make that big an impression on others because usually there aren't many unjust laws. In the U.S. most of the time everyone is treated equally, so there aren't that many ways for someone to make a huge impression on people because of an unfair law.

  27. I do believe it will make a difference in the book in how she can help her family and take action while her father is in jail and the mother is trying to "gather herself." I also believe this type of disobedient actions can change actual society. Rosa Parks made a disobedient action against a unjust law and helped to shape the world today.

  28. I believe that civil disobedience can make a change, hidden or not. I believe this because, in Martin Luther Kind Jr. and Rosa Parks, many people can notice loud acts. For example, when Rosa Parks refused to move out of the bus seat that was assigned to white people. In this case many people noticed the act and laws began to change. In Parvana's situation, she might not change many people but the people in her family might change how they see her. Parvana is no longer a small girl who follows her father into the market, she is dressing as a boy and is out shopping. Nooria may start to be more respectful to her and Parvana's mother may start to accept Hossain's death.

  29. It probably makes a difference to her family because they need money after their father is arrested; however, the Taliban are not aware of her disobedience. In fact, if they found out they would likely kill her rather than change their laws. I think that civil disobedience can sometimes change the world, but sometimes it can't. In this case, the Taliban are a terrorist organization, like the ISIS, and they won't change their rules because one person disobeyed them. It needs to be a lot more than just one person, or it needs to be a person in a higher power like how Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves.

  30. I think that there are some changes in the society. There is some unsaid feeling of no trust. Not everyone is who they really are. But, there is one thing hat brings them together. They are all obfuscating from the Taliban. Men with beards that aren't long enough and women, just for being outside of their homes.

  31. I don't really think that civil disobedience will change anything for Parvana and her family because it is not showing that the law is unfair it is just disobeying it. In other cases like Martin Luther king it can change the world he isn't just disobeying the law he is telling people it is wrong. Parvana is just disobeying it that's why in Parvana's case it doesn't help.

  35. I think that when people disobey unjust laws, that changes actual society and laws. This is because if you see people disobey laws then you may ask yourself how that person feels. Maybe that will help change the people that obey these laws and agree with them. Once many people are against a law, the government may have no choice but to change it. For example, Rosa Parks disobeyed the rules by sitting where she wanted to sit in the bus. When she went to jail, this changed peoples view.

  36. I believe that unjust laws being obliterated can change. i think this because maybe people who are terrorists, their family member had been put in jail because of a unjust law and that is why they bomb and kill people because they are mad and might have nothing else to take their anger out on. And having people not be mad good start the journey of worldpeace

  38. I think acts of civil disobedience can have a better effect in the world. With a act of hidden disobedience I feel there would be a better chance of many people getting hurt. A act of civil disobedience will be strait forward on a belief of one, that will get a reaction out of many. The only down side is it might end nicely or badly.

  40. I think that people will actually change the society by standing up for unjust laws because all throughout history there have been stories of brave people standing up for unjust things like during the American Revolution. King George lll wanted to takes his colonists hard earn money for himself and some very brave people had the power to say no and that is just what they did. The patriots started a rebellious revolution just because they knew in their hearts that it was wrong to have someone take their money away. In the end the way to make a change in society to to fix an unfit law is just having the power to say, no.

  41. I think Parvana will be able to pull this off as long as she's careful. And I think it's a good idea to wear the clothes all the time just in case someone comes around like Nooria said. I think when people disobey unjust laws, it does change actual society and law IF figured out. If it's something that has gone unnoticed nothing will change until it the truth comes out.

  42. I think Parvana would only make a difference in her family, because the only people who will know somethings different is her family. I also think that when people disobey unjust laws it will make a difference in society if others notice. I think there are some people who have good ideas but nobody notices and the ideas don't get spread. But if the idea gets spread it will make a difference.

  43. I think that people do change society when they disobey unjust laws, but this is only if society notices. Those few brave people who break unjust laws to stand up for what they believe in are usually surrounded by people who believe in the same thing, but just didn't have enough courage to DO what they did. Therefore, once that person does it, the rest of them back it up and changes all of societies belief on the situation.

  44. I think it can work if Parvana is very careful. She will have to act like boy full time or else eventually it will stop working. I think civil disobedience can change things but not all the time. Sometimes it can do amazing things and other times it does nothing.

For an example when Rosa Parks refused to get out of her bus seat the new was spread quickly and became breaking news story and she helped change civil rights forever.

  56. I think that Parvana has no other choice but to "become" a boy. Without her, there would be no one to bring food back to the family, and no money to buy anything. As the book had already explained, she is the only one that can either change appearance or go into the market and work/buy items. I believe that civil disobedience can change the world. If this catches on, and others start to do the same and disobey these wrong laws, then it might as well be a change in the way people live. Assuming that many, many people break a law, the government might even see their flaws, and lift their law since it seems to have no effect, the people work their way around it.
