Today, we acted out scenes from our novel, Nothing but the Truth, and we are beginning to see how the truth can be slowly, slowly, slowly TWISTED! What begins as a small disruption in a homeroom English class is becoming a huge catastrophe.
As we think about our own lives, we can see, too, how seemingly tiny problems can become huge conflicts. Like the characters in our novel, we all have different views and perspectives. And when problems occur, these different views can either be expressed in kindness and with understanding, or with bitterness and resentment.
Share your thoughts about this question, below: If you were Philip Malloy, right at this moment in the novel, what would or could you do to make the situation better? AND Do you ever feel like Philip?
Our word for the day is SOLILOQUY (noun) which is a dramatic speech given in a play by one character, with no others present; OR the act of talking to oneself. An example of the word in a line would be: Hamlet, in Shakespeare's play of the same name, gives a famous soliloquy when he wonders about the value of his life.
If I was Phillip at this point in the novel I would ask to meet with Dr.Doane and Dr.Panelli so we could sort the problem out looking at all sides of the problem. Also I would inform the reporter of what really happened and how it was sorted out.
ReplyDeleteFiona Morrison
I agree, but what about Phillip's parents? Will he go to them for comfort or confront the office?
Delete-- Lwiza AitDowd
I agree with what Fiona said about meeying with the school board people but I would also make sure that miss Nsrwin and Philip's parents were part of the conversation so that they could also give their views or opinions.
Delete--Emmalyn Mirarchi
If I were Philip at at this point in the novel I would tell the reporter to stop reporting the story, apologize to Miss Narwin, and get things straightened out with the office. Then weather I'd be in Miss Narwin's class or not, I'd study more and try to get my English grade up so I could start track soon.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Sam
DeleteGetting into the track team should really be his number one priority. Therefore he should do whatever it takes to get into the team. Since his coach already gave him a suggestion, he should take advantage of that opportunity.
--Tommy Wacek
If I were Phillip at this point in the story I would go directly to Dr. Seymour and ask him to help me talk to Dr. Doane and Dr. Palleni in order to sort out all of the issues. Then I would go to Miss Narwin and apologize and ask for extra work to boost my grade. I would also ask Miss Stewart to have the newspaper stop reporting on the issue.
ReplyDelete--Grace Acton
I agree with Grace about the beginning and end, but if i were Phillip i wouldn't apologize to ms. Narwin because if Phillip apologizes, Ms. Narwin may feel like she has more power, and will keep behaving the same way towards Phillip
Delete--Anna Shlimak
I agree with Grace, but DISAGREE with Anna (no offense). It was sort of Philip's fault for making it such a big deal with his parents and because of that all of the blame kind of went on Ms. Narwin. She deserves an apology, and she's not really the type to use her power against others (or that's what it seems, anyways).
Delete-- Allie Hunter
I agree with Grace I would do the same thing
DeleteJulia Proteau
If I were Phillip in this part of the story I would try to fix everything that has happened by apologizing. Also, I would tell the reporters/newspaper that I didn't want them to report on anything else, except that all the problems had been fixed and it was all justa huge misunderstanding. By saying this, I agreed with Fiona M. on what she said about how to fix the situation Phillip is in.
ReplyDeleteWho said this???
Delete~~Charlie Carbonell~~
If I were Phillip at this moment in the book I would I would feel awful and not be worried about track or anything. The thing is, I could try to sort this out with the reporter, but since the article is already published, the matter is viral and irreversible. The best thing to do now would be to talk to the school board and everyone involved to maybe try to work on straightening things out and keeping it low. The Philip way to do things would be to hold my ground, and let the adults settle things. What affects them doesn't affect me, right?
ReplyDeleteI sometimes do feel like Philip when I get into serious arguments. I feel resentment toward the one I'm arguing with, and I feel like my way is always right. I feel that whoever sides with me is trustworthy even though they could be using me. It happens to all humans because we all have pride; We all have solipsism. This is why I sometimes feel like Philip.
I think its really cool how you could stay calm when all of this is happening. Right now in the book Philip is really scared.
DeleteIf I were Phillip in this point of the book i would probably get in touch with the reporter and tell her to stop writing about that topic, and also to write an article about what really happened. I probably wouldn't apologize to Ms. Narwin because like Phillip's parents said: he should stand up for himself. Also, from what we have read, Ms. Narwin has been a bit unfair to Phillip and if he apologizes she may continue with treating him the same way. I sometimes feel like Phillip, like when i know something is wrong, and feel a bit guilty.
ReplyDelete--Anna Shlimak
I agree with you Anna, but your paragraph also made me think that perhaps Philip should ask the reporter why she twisted the truth? Was it an accident on her part, did she mishear what others said, or did she mean to lie to get a more interesting story?
Delete-Gwyneth Smedley
If I were Philip at this moment of the book, I would start by explaining what really happened to my parents as my initiative. Then, I would go to Dr. Doane and Dr. Paellini and get things straightened out. The last thing would probably go to Miss. Narwin and beg for forgiveness. After apologizing, Phillip would get back to his normal life, running on the track team and hanging out with friends. As for the newspaper article, Philip should just ignore it and focus on good grades.
ReplyDelete-- Lwiza AitDowd
I agree with Lwiza, he was not explaining the full truth of ignoring Miss. Narwin, he should tell his parents he forgot a thing. He also needs to focus on grades more than annoying this teacher.
DeleteI would probably talk to Ms. Stewart, Dr. Doane and Mr. Palleni and sort out everything. Tell them the truth. I would also talk to Miss Narwin and straiten everything out. Well I'm there i would make sure I could get extra help from her. All people will feel guilty. It happens to everybody. It has happened to me. Me, Grace and Fiona M both have the same thoughts. We all think that he should meet up with every teacher and sort the problem out.
ReplyDelete--Olivia Gomez
I agree with Olivia. If, I was Phillip, I would go to everyone to sort out there point of view and try to find out the real truth.
Delete-- Meili Stanten
If I were Philip at this point in the book. I would feel terrible about everything I've done and I would wish I could change the past. I would know that the best thing to do is tell everyone (My parents, the reporter, Dr. Pallini, Dr. Seymour, Dr. Doane, Mrs. Narwin, and everyone else I've lied to) the truth. This would be extremely hard to do, and I don't know if I would be able to bring myself to do it. Sometimes, I feel like Philip when I tell a lie (on accident or on purpose) and it creates a huge problem.
ReplyDeleteI think that Phillip should apologize for his acts, a good way to do that we be to meet with all of them at the same time. If he did this, he would only have to apologize once and it would be easier in a way. In addition to apologizing he should set everything straight and make sure that everyone was on the same page.
Delete-Magnus Miller
If I was Phillip in this part of the novel, I would feel like I would be taking things way too far and I would stop making such a big deal out of a small thing. If I were Phillip, I would apologize to Miss Darwin and I would try to sort everything out with Dr. Palleni and Dr.Doane, so I could be in different classes. I would also tell the reporter to stop what they're doing, and that the reporting is just making everything worse!
ReplyDelete--Pasha Sahin
Pasha, Man, Dude
DeleteI don't agree with your statement, because if Phillip tried to straighten things out with all the teachers they would be mad at him for "spreading the wrong story" and would give him another suspension.
I agree with Max, Pasha, everyone would just get angry at him for spreading a "false rumor."
DeleteHey Fiona, nice paragraph! My answer is very similar to yours and i think we both agree that Phillip should sort everything out with Dr.Doane and Dr.Palleni. The last line of your paragraph also made me think that Phillip should do that so he could resolve the problem.Nice Job!
ReplyDelete--Pasha Sahin
If I was Phillip, I would try to make sure that the Manchester Record had the right facts, and Dr. Doane, and Mr. Palleni and I were all on the same page; maybe plan a meeting with both of them, Miss Stewart, Dr. Seymour, and my parents o get everything straight.
ReplyDelete-Magnus Miller
I agree with Magnus because if everyone got together they could here everyone else's side of the story and work something out
DeleteIf I were Phillip I would tell Ms. Stewart the story again and make her give the story to news shows and different places so that everyone will know it and after everyone knows the teachers will want it resolved and tell the truth.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Max.
Delete-David Sampson
I agree with you completely. the teachers would definitely want it corrected, and therefore probably tell the truth.
DeleteI agree with Max, I would make sure to bring enough evidence to support the idea that the suspension was unfair. I would also be sure to bring someone powerful to the ones involved opposing Phillip, so I would have a chance to argue without being ignored.
DeleteAt first when I read Liwiza's comment I disagreed with her that Phillip should apologize to Miss Narwin; but then I thought that maybe Phillip should apologize for being disruptive. Although he should explain to her that sending him out of the room was a little extreme for just singing the national anthem. Also I sometimes feel like Phillip when something (not necessarily something "bad") is made into a bigger deal than it should be.
ReplyDeleteFiona Morrison
I agree that Phillip should apologize to Ms. Narwin, but also explain how he thought that she was being a little too extreme when sending him out of the room got him suspended.
Delete--Grace Acton
If I were Philip, I think I would talk to Ms Narwin, Dr. Doane, and Dr. Palleni to figure out what the school rules really are and to try to find out what each person's point of view is and to tell them my perspective. I do sometimes feel like Philip when something gets turned into a huge deal when it really isn't, even if it is a good thing, not getting in trouble.
ReplyDeleteLiza Toll
I agree that Philip should figure out what the school rules really are. Maybe there was miss communication between everyone in the story. It would be good if everyone knew what each person though of the situation.
Delete-Angela Xing
I agree that Phillip should figure out the rules and give his perspective, but he should also explain that he wants to be on the track team, and see what extra work he can do and help he can get to have a better grade in English to be able to join.
DeleteI agree that Phillip should investigate all sides of the situation. I also agree that I am like Phillip whenn something is turned into a big deal even if it is good or bad.
Delete--Raiya Suliman
I agree with Anna (Shlimak) that Philip shouldn't apologize to Ms Narwin because it will make her keep treating him unfairly. I do think he should try a little harder in her class, though, because he is sometimes rude to her in English, and he might be able to raise his grade so that he can start track. This could also lead to her treating him more fairly, because Ms Narwin thinks that Philip is a good kid and she wants to see him try and do well.
ReplyDeleteLiza Toll
I agree with Liza and Anna on this topic of Phillip shouldn't apologize to Ms. Narwin.
DeleteI agree with the statement stating that Philip should apologize to Ms. Narwin, even though Philip has a disliking towards her. Narwin might have it out for Philip but if he tried harder and did not make goofy statements maybe the disliking would lessen and his grade would improve.
ReplyDeleteIf I was Phillip, I would try to explain to the reporters that there was actually no rule against singing the star spangled banner, there is just a rule that you shouldn't be creating a disturbance. I would also ask Dr. Doane about the rules and sort them out with him too. Sometimes I think that sometimes I feel like Phillip, because sometimes people make a huge deal about a tiny situation. When they explain there point of view, they try to make the other person seem like they did the thing wrong.
ReplyDelete-- Meili Stanten
I think that Meilis way in telling things to the reporters is a good way to help the situation. Adding on to what she had to say about asking Dr.Doane I would get all the staff of the school and explain what happened just to make sure everyone knows what the situation was.
Delete--------Lucy Bodtman
I agree with you, but also I think that if he really wants to get on the track team, he should just accept that the school is right, even if I think they aren't.
DeleteIf i was philip i would keep telling my story until everybody knew. Then i would leave Ms. Narwins classes.
ReplyDeleteDavid Sampson
If I were Philip, I would first determine what I really want. I don't want the attention of the newspaper article, I really want to be on the track team. Therefore, I would tell Ms. Narwin it was a mistake for me to talk to the reporter, and ask if she would allow me to do extra work. Then I would ask my parents not to push me to do these things for the newspaper.
ReplyDelete--Tommy Wacek
If I were Philip, I would go to the newspaper and share the extremely detailed story with them. Also I do feel like philip sometimes.
ReplyDeleteIf I was Phillip, I would call a meeting with all the teachers involved in my suspension. I would make them hear me out, then I would hear their side(s) of the story.
ReplyDelete~~Charlie Carbonell~~
If I were Philip I would tell my parents that I wanted this commotion to stop, apologize to all those who inconvenienced, and apologize to the principle and tell her that all I wanted was to get out of Ms. Narwin's classes. Also once and a while I do feel like Philip.
ReplyDelete-Gwyneth Smedley
I agree with Gwyneth. I would apologize and straighten everything out.
DeleteBrianna
I agree with you Gwenyth, except that Philip might feel like he shouldn't have to apologize because in his mind, he didn't do anything wrong.

If I were Philip, I would talk to Miss Narwin and get her perspective of the situation. I would also figure out what the school rule actually was. The I would talk to the news paper and get the story straightened out. I sometimes do feel like Philip because I want to make a team or practice more, but the schoolwork is piling up and you still need to keep good grades. There is a lot of pressure on that.
ReplyDelete-Angela Xing
I agree, there is a lot of pressure to get good grades. I also agree to talk to Ms. Narwin because she is the one who got this thing all to the principal. I do not get what you mean by "get her perspective of the situation"
DeleteRachel Shrives
If i were Phillip, I would personally go to the office with Mr. and Mrs. Malloy and try to talk calmly to the principal, assistant principal etc.. I would bring along the memo sent about suspension and Ms. Stewart. I would try to work out the confusion and what has been falsely stated. I do sometimes feel like Phillip when I am in a situation where I have no power to argue about what I think is right.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything Tom said except for bringing the memo about suspension. I disagree with that part because Philip didn't know about the memo involving his suspension, so he would not be able to bring it with him.
DeleteGood idea, but I think before you even do that, just apologize to Miss Narwin like I said in my post, I believe by combining my idea and yours, Philip would get out of the mess he made.
DeleteNick Joe Lewis
If I were Philip, I would try and make the issue better by going back to the reporter and telling her the whole story all over again without other people around to mess it up again (like his father or other neighbors). I would make sure to not make it sound like such a big deal.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I've never really felt like Philip before.
-- Allie Hunter
I believe doing this wouldn't fix anything because the reporter wants to make a big deal out of nothing so she can get her story, Philip explaining the actual story wouldn't fix anything unless he released his own point of view to a different reporter.
DeleteNick Joe Lewis
if I were Phillip I would try to gather all the people up like the principal and vice principal and miss narwin and tell the reporter the true story so the problem doesn't keep growing. I've never been in that tough a situation like mike
ReplyDelete-Jacob elliott
If I were Philip in this situation I would probably call the author of the news article and tell her she wasn't using the whole truth. I would also give the school an apology just because the author made it seem like the school didn't let kids express their patriotism. This makes it seem like the schools staff aren't nice or fair people. Lastly, I don't think that I've ever dealt in a situation like Philips.
ReplyDelete-------------Lucy Bodtman

If I were Philip I would tell the assistant principle the whole story correctly. Then I would actually try in ELA so his grades get up and she likes people who try in her class. That would greatly improve the problem.
ReplyDeleteI've never felt like Philip before.
Stefan Scornavacca
If I were Philip in this part of the novel, I would try my best to get this straightened out. I would organize a big metting with everyone involved in this problem and have everyone take a turn saying their understanding and then come to the correct conclusion. I would make sure that the whole school board is clear on the riles and make sure to have good communication. That is what I would do if I was Philip in this part of the novel.
ReplyDelete--Emmalyn Mirarchi
DeleteIf i were Phillip, i would have a conversation with Miss Narwin to try to figure it out. I would also try to stop the big rumor on the newspapers and just tell them that all he wanted was to switch homerooms. Also, he should just tell his parents the truth about his grades and how he cant join the track team because of them. Phillip just has to be careful and manage his grades.
ReplyDelete-Devin Patel
If I was Philip I would want to tell the reporter what she had wrong so that the article in the paper could be "edited" so that she had the right information and then maybe everyone else involved would be forced to tell the truth as well.

ReplyDeleteIf I was Philip I would make sure that the principal, vice principal, and the manchester record all had the same story. I would have them all talk to each other at the same time so they could all get their facts straightened out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with will about the newspaper and getting the story right but i would also try to resolve the conflict between myself and Mrs. Narwin.
DeleteIf I were Philip in this situation, I would simply apologize to Miss Narwin and ask for some extra work so I could bring my grade up, allowing me to participate the track team and obliterate any future drama. I feel like Philip does whenever I have to redo a project or any type of work that took me a while to complete.
ReplyDeleteNick Joe Lewis
If I were Philip, I would talk to Dr. Doane and Dr. Pallini and apologize to them. Since this problem is what is keeping him from the joining the track team, I think I would just deal with Miss. Narwin and work harder in English class even if I didn't like the book. I would also talk to the reporter about doing some sort of story that would give the school's good name back.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Phillip, I would talk to everyone that the reporter talked with and not only apologize to them but tell them exactly what happened. Sometimes I get into a situation when something happens to me and it rumors around my friends and the story changes a little each time.
ReplyDeleteBrianna
I would stop singing in her class and be more polite to Ms. Narwin. I would also talk to the reporter and tell her that she blew the problem out of hand.
ReplyDeleteJulia Proteau
if i was philip i would make sure that everyone had the same story so there was no difference in anyones mind
ReplyDeleteI think if I were Philip I would try to resolve the conflict between myself and Mrs. Narwin and try to compromise a way to try to get on the track team.
ReplyDeleteClayton Hanlon
That seems like a reasonable aproach to resolving the problem.
Deletei would fix all the stories so they were right.

--sean mcnamara
If I were Philip, I try my best to resolve the issue by getting out of Miss. Narwin's class. All Philip was trying to do was make Miss Narwin laugh or smile, but clearly no matter what he did could make her do so. By taking Philip away from her altogether, they could solve the problem.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Phillip at this point I would arrange a parent teacher confrence with Dr. Palleni and Principal Doane, perhaps then they could work things out in the same room so that Phillip could be out of Ms. Narwin's class and the suspension could be lifted.
ReplyDeleteFiona Nash
I would probably try to explain and apologize that the information that the reporter had was wrong and apologize to ms.narwin.I do sometimes feel like Philip.
ReplyDelete--Emily Rypinski
I would tell the reporter the mistakes that were made in the story and then try to explain to Miss Narwin what his side of the story was. He shouldn't try explaining to the assistant principal because they disregarded everything Phillip was saying but I think that Miss Narwin would listen to him.

ReplyDeleteIf I was in Phillip's situation, I would try to analyze the scenario. I would ask myself whether or not I am really singing in class to stand up for my rights, or I am doing it in spite of Mrs. Narwin's attitude towards me. Even though Dr. Doane, or Dr. Palleni may be giving the wrong information, I would still reconsider my punishment, because I may deserve it. I would also apologize if this is true. This rethinking of my doings, is very unlikely to happen in real life, but it is necessary in order to get things on the right trajectory.
ReplyDelete--Raiya Suliman
I agree with you.
DeleteI would apologize either way, if I did do something wrong, or if it's just a mistake because I would want to make things better. Then, if I strongly disagreed, I would talk to Miss Narwin separately about why I was singing along.
Deletei disagree with Raiya because Philip didnt do anything wrong. Also apologizing wouldn't do anything he was already suspended.
Deleteyea I would agree with Raya. I would apologize either way
DeleteIf I was in Phillip's scenario, I would see if Ms.Narwin, and Dr.Palleni are being fair about the punishment. If no, I would stand up for my rights and keep going on with what I believe in. If yes, I would apologize to all the staff who were involved in the affair, ask Ms.Narwin for extra credit to get my grades up and then get back on the track team and win.
ReplyDelete-Chris Pickreign
I agree with Chris (Pickreing) because I think I would want to have rights in school, but i would also want the punishment to be fair; i do not think that humming is worthy of a suspension.
DeleteI totally agree with Raiya's answer I think that the idea of analyzing the scenario is great. Also the end part about that there are not a lot of people who rethink about what is going on is true because in real life not many people actually do that.
ReplyDelete-Chris Pickreign
if i were in phillips situation what i would try to do is talk to my dad or the neighbor and ask to met with the reporter. if i got to meet with her, what i would try to say is that this whole situation is a misunderstanding. and i would tell her the truth, or what really happened. i would also try to go see ms Narwin and say how i didnt mean for it to go this far and i would ask her if i could switch out of her class. i usally dont feel like Phillip but sometimes i do feel like people strech what i really tell them.
ReplyDelete~ Cierra Wilkins
I agree with Cierra about explaining that everything was a misunderstanding.
Deletei agree with Rachel about setting up a big meeting with the principals.
ReplyDelete~Cierra Wilkins
Because Philip is in such an awkward position for himself as he wasn't very excited that his story was in the paper, I would think he would want to sort this all out so Ms. Stewart could print another story in the paper clarifying all this false information. I would go to the school office and request a meeting with Ms. Narwin, the principal, assistant principal, Ms. Stewart, and Ted Griffen. I would try to talk about what my intentions really were by singing, and hear what others thought about the situation, and exactly why they suspended me, and then try to sort it all out. I also might apologize to Ms. Narwin, depending on what mine and her intentions really were.
ReplyDelete-Shreya Kumar
I agree with Raiya
ReplyDeleteIf I were Philip Malloy, I would get everyone who is involved in the commotion I caused and settle it by apologizing for what I caused. I would say I didn't mean to make such a big deal and I didn't know that it would turn out to be such a great big whopping mess. AND yes, I do feel like Philip sometimes.
ReplyDeleteIf i was Philip i feel like i wouldn't be able to do anything because it already happened and it is probably already on his record. Even if the school reversed his suspension he went to school on Monday the school probably already put in is records that he was suspended.
ReplyDelete--Natalie L'Ecuyer
I feel like Philip when I say something and people take it a different way. I would just go to the newspaper office and tell them what I meant.
ReplyDeleteI do not think I have ever felt like Philip before. And if I was Philip this moment I would probably talk to the principle about meeting with my parents and talking through the problem, which is happening and I would go to the person who wrote the newspaper and I would tell her; what really happened that day. But that would not change a thing because the newspaper has already been realized and anybody can read it and they will not know about my talk with the reporter. So I will try to get the word out to people about the truth, tell the reporter to make another paragraph about this problem and if she says no because it is not the most interesting thing like people will not be talking as much or something. Than I would go to another reporter and ask them to tell the real story.
ReplyDeleteI am going to respond to Grace Acton:
I agree with Grace because the adults would probably do a better job at clearing things out than a 9th grader. And I would probably go and see Mrs. Narwin because one I owed her an apology, two I need to get my grade up not just because of my track team but I want good grades, tree it would be my only chance to not be like an enemy with my own English teacher.
I agree with you because I would also like to clear things up with every one so they dont get the wrong idea on the whole matter.
Deletei would just clear up everything with the reporter and tell the truth to everyone

ReplyDeleteI think that I would try to go and tell the reporter that she had over exaggerated and not totally said the truth and that letting everyone know that this is the "true" story ( but it is really not) and have everyone think that this is how the story went be it really wasn't like this and if I were Philip I would go and apologize to all of the people who really didn't have much to do with this situation

ReplyDeletepersonally I would apologize to Ms. Narwin, because he really wants to be on the track team; but you need to have "passing grades" to participate in school sports. Phillip has a D in english and I feel he apologizes first of all he wont get suspended, second of all he could end up having a better relationship with the teacher and could possibly get a better grade in the class. And I have felt like felt like Phillip on more than one occasion.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Philip I would also say sorry to Ms.Narwin and I would ask to talk to the principal and the vice principal at the same time to clear things up.
ReplyDeleteI agree with colleen because first and foremost, you need to apologize so that there is no tension while the "fixing proses" is going on.
DeleteIf i were Philip i would go to first the news reporter and say the actual whole story. Then i would go to the principal and explain my half of the story ask for forgiveness and ask to switch out of her English class to benefit both of them.
